What kinna lanyards are you guys using? I know no one uses a basic lanyard anymore but whos doing clip on and whos doing noose? Last night i bought and tried a smitty noose. I loved it. I coulnt even tell i had a whistle on my kneck wonce i started sweating a bit. what do you guys prefer?
*I think im gunna stick with the noose. |
I use a smitty (clip on). However, I carry a noose on my backup whistle. Why? Once I had the loop on the shirt fail leaving no place to clip the smitty. Spitting the whistle out and having it bounce across the floor was only funny the first time or two. Luckily it was a summer league game.

I had the same experience as Camron only it was during a school varsity game. The whistle loop on my shirt snapped in half. Luckily, one of the JV refs had a lanyard and went to the locker room to get it for me. I still use a smitty, but I always carry a lanyard in my pocket just in case.

Ever since I broke a loop during a game, I carry a spare loop and large sewing machine in my pocket.
At least, that's what I tell the cheerleaders. :p Damn - where's those meds? |

By the way, what exactly is a Smitty noose lanyard? I have a couple noose lanyards, and I have a couple Smitty's (what you guys are calling the clip-on type, I guess). But I didn't know there was a Smitty noose lanyard

I've seen some people take a standard long lanyard and feed it through the smitty loop then over their head. It appears that the lanyard stays in place much like a smitty or a noose. |

The Smitty noose lanyard
Here's the <a href="http://www.honigs.com/store/shop.mpl?Cat=2&Item=670">Smitty noose</a> lanyard at Honig's.

I think Smitty has the patent/trademark on the noose lanyard.
Doesn't mean there aren't copycats, FWIW. I use the "old" clip-on Smittys. The thought of wearing something referred to as a noose scares me! |

Here's a photo of the Smitty Noose lanyard from their website. As you can see, it does exist.
BTW - notice how it enhances your "court presence". ;) http://www.smittylanyards.com/images/noose1.jpg |
I use a smitty, attached to the little loop on my shirt. However, in a university spring league and in some men's leagues games, I use just the whistle. I've actually become quite good at it. I haven't dropped the whistle in about 6-8 months. It's fun too.

SMITTY
It seems as though a lot of college officials use the Smitty, does anyone know if they are required to be on some of the college staffs?
|
Also it seems that a lot of upper level officials use neither during the summer season. I asked the question as to why, and the answer I got is that it gives them an extra second to think about the call that they are making.

It's a personal preference, but I hate the noose lanyard.
It tend to tangle up a bit, and the whistle can "bounce" around too much in those few seconds per game the whistle is not in your mouth. |
Personally, I don't like the idea of working a game in a hostle gym with a noose around my neck. :p
|
Mark, I agree...A noose around the neck just doesn't sound appealing!

OK - you knew someone was going to say it eventually. |
I use the noose lanyard as well. I've used it for the past 4 years. A lot of officials will ask where I got it and to be honest, I don't really remember.
I was officiating a game the first year I had the noose lanyard and the varsity coach's wife was taking the books. She glanced at my lanyard and said-- "That is the cutest thing I've ever seen! It's like a little noose around your neck." It dawned on her one second later that I am a black guy and her faced turned bright, bright red. I just laughed and made a joke of it. She felt a lot better after that. She, and her husband, were such nice people. They requested me to do some of their varsity...but I moved away. :( |
