Bracketology & Tournament Discussion

Okay, it's great fun to fill out a bracket and see how we do against each other but wouldn't it be great if someone from the forum were to win!?!

With that in mind, discussion:

Who are some double digit seeds that might pull off an upset or two?

A single digit seed that might be ripe?

Thoughts on 8/9 matchups or the best 12/5 upset possiblity?

BktBallRef Tue Mar 13, 2012 08:25pm

Double digit seeds:

Having seen NC State play three teams last week, I think they can get to the second round, although admittedly, I don't know much about SDSU.

West Virginia, playing 60 miles(?) from home in Pittsburgh. Tough draw for Gonzaga. WVU advances?

Texas/Cincy? I didn't like the way UC looked against Louisville.

Colorado/UNLV? CU won the Pac-12 but that ain't saying a lot.

Indiana sucks on the road. New Mexico St. looks strong.

Long Beach State? Tough draw for New Mexico according to the experts.

Any locals know anything about these teams?

truerookie Tue Mar 13, 2012 08:38pm

The 5/12 Matchup with Harvard/Vandy. I believe Amaker can pull this one off.

I am concern for Syracsue.

BktBallRef Tue Mar 13, 2012 09:23pm

I think Vandy is playing pretty well right now.

I think 'Cuse gets through the 1st two rounds. Then, Boeheim is probably going to get as far from NY as he can for a couple of weeks!

Nevadaref Tue Mar 13, 2012 09:28pm

Big concern for Syracuse now! No grades = no play.

I agree with WVA over the Zags due to travel and location of the game.
Long Beach is good, but New Mexico is playing great so I must pick them.

I don't like Indiana, but NV beat NMSU both times this season.

Unlv is better than Colorado as both are tough defensive teams.

NC State should beat a SDSU team which lost too much from last season.
If Cincy doesn't hit a major scoring drought, I like them.

fortmoney Tue Mar 13, 2012 09:40pm

I got WKU beating UNC for the championship

Which is what happened against Louisville.

I don't think the travel will be a concern for the Zags, I believe they will pull it off.

Isn't SDSU coached by the famed fab five Steve Fisher? I like'em over NC State.

BktBallRef Tue Mar 13, 2012 10:27pm

Just when you think Iona could be the next VCU or Butler, they show us why they're a 14 seed, playing on Tuesday.

BktBallRef Tue Mar 13, 2012 10:58pm

55 points in the first half.

17 points in the second half.

Wow.

rockyroad Tue Mar 13, 2012 11:38pm

San Diego State can flat out play ball - when their heads are screwed on straight. Lots of bad defense from them at times - more concerned with getting blocked shots than playing fundamental defense. If they come ready to play then NC State is in trouble.

UNLV should handle Colorado. Buffs really don't have much of a half court offense - did anyone in the Pac 12???

I think Texas can take Cinci, and South Florida can take Temple (assuming they get past Cal tomorrow). Those are my two upset picks the first round.

Gonzaga/West Virginia should be a great game.

OrStBballRef Tue Mar 13, 2012 11:45pm

Successfull start

Well my bracket starts out 0-2.....geez....a 16 point lead and a 25 point lead. All gone.

When I looked at my bracket in the elite 8 I think I have typical 1-2/1-3 matchups....the only real upsets I saw our WVU over Gonzaga and I have Murray State to the sweet 16.

I have Kentucky, Missouri, and UNC in the final 4 and I had Syracuse but now I will have to revise that pick:

When you don't have DirecTv you start smoking pot.
When you start smoking pot you stop showing up to class.
When you stop showing up to class your grades drop.
When your grades drop you become ineligible for the NCAA Tourney.
Don't become ineligible for the NCAA tourney. Get DirecTV

Probably go with Florida State as tOSU burned me last year...I was listening to the radio on the way home from work today and they said after the announcement a lot of money in Vegas flowed to tOSU so take it for what it is worth....

BktBallRef Wed Mar 14, 2012 09:19pm

So much for Pat Knight's NCAA tourney run.

26 Year Gap Thu Mar 15, 2012 07:44am

I have Harvard winning a couple of games. Looking at VCU/Davidson to run into the Kentucky buzzsaw.

truerookie Thu Mar 15, 2012 08:26am

Wichita St./Kentucky in the Sweet 16.

Syracuse/Kansas St. match up in the second round will be interesting.

The Florida St/Ohio st possible meeting in the Sweet 16 would be a good game to watch.

I couldn't have been more wrong about the Zags. They went out and kicked butt today. Good for them. I've been a fan of that program for about 10 years now, so it's cool that they proved my theory to be wrong.
I also didn't think VCU had enough to beat Wichita, but they did in a fun game to watch! I have now been at VCU's last three tourney wins.
Ditto for the CO/UNLV game. Knew it would be close, but had the wrong side.
At least i saved myself total embarrassment by being right about the Indiana/NMSU and New Mexico/Long Beach contests. I was $ on those.

grunewar Fri Mar 16, 2012 04:06am

Lovin me some Zags. Huggy, "buh-bye."

Lcubed48 Fri Mar 16, 2012 02:29pm

Don't mess with success

Will you be in the house on Saturday?

Mark Padgett Fri Mar 16, 2012 02:45pm

When I went to the bank this morning (no, not to stick it up), the teller told me that their branch is having a bracketing contest for the tournament. She showed me her bracket picks and she picked Missou to win it all. She said one of the other tellers, who is her best friend, picked Kentucky.

I'm not sure, but I think the winner gets a roll of pennies.

If it is full of wheaties, then it is a good deal.

Nevadaref Fri Mar 16, 2012 05:51pm

Norfolk State pulls off the BIG upset!

buckrog64 Fri Mar 16, 2012 05:55pm

Nice upset but I'm hosed. Missouri didn't look like they came to play from what little I saw of the game.

Johnny Ringo Fri Mar 16, 2012 05:56pm

Do you agree with where the throw-in was administered? Shouldn't it have went to the endline rather than the sideline?

BktBallRef Fri Mar 16, 2012 06:00pm

EDIT: Ball was in the lane when TO was granted.

Anyway, next year, no bracket for me. I think I'll enjoy the tournament better without it.

I just posted that in the video request thread.

grunewar Fri Mar 16, 2012 06:53pm

No pennies for you!

I stopped by the local AAU complex after work and watched the end of the game. There were multilple Norfolk AAU teams in the complex. The lobby was full folks watching the game. There were parents out in lobby watching NSU/Mizzou instead of their own children's games. Officials and coaches checking in on the game at halftime of their own games. And one of comlex administrators is even a MEAC observer. So the place went nuts went Mizzou missed that last 3.

There was some conflicted feelings though because Ricardo Ratliffe (#10) of Mizzou came through this same AAU program.

26 Year Gap Fri Mar 16, 2012 08:45pm

:DIt WAS the big upset.

grunewar Fri Mar 16, 2012 08:46pm

Abd!

Anyone other than me have Lehigh?

Ok, neither did I. ;)

Another 15 over 2 with local flavor. Hairston and Dawkins of Duke both were teammates on the local AAU powerhouse program (Boo Williams) that Ricardo Ratliffe of Mizzou came through.

BktBallRef Fri Mar 16, 2012 09:02pm

I got Ohio and Purdue right!

APG Fri Mar 16, 2012 09:20pm

After the Norfolk State game, there were two perfect brackets...after Leheigh, there are exactly zero perfect brackets left.

21-7 so far with only 4 first round games left to play.

My Elite 8 is still intact and I actually had Ohio going to the Sweet 16.
