take whistle out of mouth or just let it drop out?

I also do volleyball to kill time between hoops and was at a clinic today and was told never to let whistle fall out of mouth, always take it out.

I must admit, I've never heard this in basketball, and conciously don't know what I do. Calling a foul, talking to partners, giving signals, I just let it drop.

Comments? Is this germane only to volleyball?

JeroenB Sat Mar 10, 2012 04:39pm

I don't know, I usually take it out (I think, not even sure haha)

Raymond Sat Mar 10, 2012 04:40pm

I was actually given the opposite advice, only touch my whistle when putting it in my mouth. Otherwise just let it drop because it wont' go anywhere. Whenever she saw an official holding their whistle she would tell them to let go of the their pacifier.

Let it drop. Note to the yahoos that don't use a lanyard: Let it drop. ROFLMAO!!

Haha! Thought the same thing.

I imagine because volleyball is slow and deliberate with signals and you're on stage, six feet up, it might look better to take whistle out of mouth.

Mark Padgett Sat Mar 10, 2012 06:06pm

Once I had a coach tell me to take my whistle out of my mouth. Wait - he didn't say "mouth". Never mind.

And I've been told that my posts are offensive?

Are we really trying to have a competition for who is more unfunny/offensive?

For the record, I don't find Mark's comment offensive. Neither is it funny, IMHO. I can say the same exact thing about many posts by other members.

JRutledge Sat Mar 10, 2012 08:50pm

I let it drop.

I broke the little loop back in the day and could not keep it off the floor for that half. Now I use only a lanyard for that reason.

Peace

I don't either, just a sarcastic reference to comment from a Forum member, in another thread, that my posts were offensive, and another opportunity for me to yank Mark Padgett's "lanyard".

BillyMac Sun Mar 11, 2012 06:36am

Noose Lanyard ...

Been there. Done that. I tried the "Smitty" when it first came out. It lasted a very short time. The only way you'll get me to give up my noose lanyard is when you pry it from my cold, dead neck.

In basketball, the purpose of a smitty (lanyard) is either:
  1. to allow you to just let it drop, or
  2. serve as a backup in case you suck at taking it out of your mouth

If (b), then very quickly it would turn into (a). Which makes the advice you received worthless. So it must apply only to volleyball.

Welpe Sun Mar 11, 2012 07:21am

I wear a smitty lanyard and I let it drop. I do also carry a noose lanyard in case the little plastic ring on my shirt breaks.

Why don't you drop it and realize that your off-topic posts are not really enjoyed by anyone but you?

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. Sun Mar 11, 2012 11:00am

Started officiating in "The Ancient Times" and used what would know be called a "traditional" lanyard. When the Smitty came out I started using that. I still have Smitty's in my whistle bag. I also have the "noose" type and the "choker" type that has that break away snap. I prefer the "chocker" followed by the Smitty. I never did like the "noose" type.

Because you figured that it would give your partners ideas?

The signal-to-noise ratio isn't high enough. But that's fine, I've given up and will put him on the ignore list.

I don't know how the "content" got in there. I'll try not to let it happen again.

Mark Padgett Sun Mar 11, 2012 05:51pm

I use a Smitty. As far as I'm concerned, no noose is good noose.

Because I enjoy them. If I drop it, then I won't be able to enjoy them.

You got the "really" part right. I know for a fact that a very, very, small number of Forum members do enjoy my posts.

Basketball has always been fun for me. Playing basketball was fun. Coaching basketball used to be fun. Officiating basketball is fun. Posting on a basketball officiating forum is fun. Mostly serious, but still, officiating is a little fun. When officials here in my little corner of Connecticut get together, we have a lot of fun, with, or without, adult beverages.

I won't say to get a sense of humor because different people have a different sense of humor, some people are just a little more serious than others, and some people are just a little sillier than others. There are seven billion of us on this planet, and there's room for a lot of different types of people. Since we're all stuck here, and none of us will leave this planet alive, then we might as well tolerate each other, and try to get along as best as we can.

Prefer singing "Kumbaya" around a campfire in the lane.

I don't remember what I do for volleyball, but I suspect that I let it drop like I do in basketball. I can ask about the presence of primary rules in the proper forum.

I learned a trick quickly about these loops. Take the ring out of an old whistle and put it on the loop. Then the Smitty clips to the ring and it won't wear your loop away.

Neat trick. I will try that one.

Another option is to replace the hard plastic, metal or cloth loop with a small black rubber grommet. The "stretch" the rubber provides prevents wear and tear.
