Good point just another ref. Otherwise we could have a ball remain live for several minutes with several changes of possession.

Well, this is why I wouldn't go to the second dead ball -- if you go to the first dead ball, you don't have to worry much about having all points/fouls/etc. count.

Regardless, I think the current interpretation handcuffs the officials too much -- mistakes happen and allowing the wrong team to complete a throw in shouldn't entitle that team to the ball.

Since I'm not king, it really doesn't matter. I do know I've seen officials ignore the interpretation, though, stop play, and give the ball to the proper team. And I've *never* heard anyone complain. It may not be the right thing to do, but most people think it is.

The one constant: all of my supervisors would've been upset.

I think the consensus among them would've been don't make a bad situation worse by screwing up twice.
