Jump Ball 3 whistles?
At a play off last night, Girls Varsity, 3 man crew.
Had a held ball past into the lane from lead's position, and all 3 guys blew their whistle. Is this acceptable? Should all 3 guys be looking at the ball? I could see, 2 whistle, but 3? |

I'd like to think it would be okay for all 3 officials to be cognizant of whats going on in the f/c paint.
Perhaps 3 whistles weren't needed but as long as all 3 didnt close down on it, WTH. From my experience, girls games typically have more held balls than boys games. That could've been a focal point of their pregame discussion.

Where was the play? If it was outside the paint on strong side C doesn't need to have a whistle as either the Lead or the Trail should be able to see it.
If the play curled into the paint that the C has a good look and either the Lead or the Trail is most likely straight-lined so the C and whichever of the other 2 that had a open look should have the other whistle. Also, if there has been any rough play previously the crew might have just been hyper-sensistive to any possible scrums.

In a girl's game, the paint is everyone's primary as far as I am concerned. So would I be worried about 3 whistles - no. Would we laugh about it and give each other crap about it later - absolutely.

Well, there is ONE spot on the floor where at least some part of the play will be in all 3 official's primary.

No big deal. But in a camp I know something would be said if 3 whistles were put on a routine held ball.

If nobody is in your PCA do you referee the paint & lines? Or is it okay to go referee some players? Should we have tunnel vision on our PCA? Or is it okay use our FOV? You act as if multi-tasking is not a skillset officials should have! With what I dont know, but I wasnt the ONLY person who said that... It seems as though every step I take, every post I make, you'll be watching me.

Some plays have a congestion of players in one area. Jump balls are usually congested mess and can have all the players in one spot with players not in the scrum standing around waiting for the outcome. At the free throw line, in the end of everyone's coverage area a triple whistle is fine.... As long as one doesn't come up held ball, one comes up with a travel, and another comes up with a foul.
