I know this is off-topic, but I'll bet one of you knows...

Does anyone know of a good source that compiles the "rules" for keeping basketball stats. I know much of it is fairly obvious, but I would like some clarifications on some points.

Thanks!

Joe

Each organization has it's own "rules,"

The NCAA scorers manual is at their web-site.

I was looking for exactly what bob jenkins pointed to - a statistician's manual. The specific file at the NCAA site is:

http://www.ncaa.org/library/statisti..._stats_man.pdf

Thanks Bob! If anybody knows of any others (particularly one with any differences for HS ball), that would be interesting, too.

Actually, my main question was in regard to "balancing" missed shots (FGAs + FTAs) and rebounds - especially in regard to "team rebounds" - on a box score. There is a discussion of "dead-ball rebounds" in the manual cited above which answered my questions.

I've taken stats during games (or from tape) in the past, and I have a great deal of respect for the work that the "real" statisticians do. There are a lot of finer points that I originally did not consider. These guys make at least as many (if not more) quick judgement calls as officials. Like officials, they have to have a pretty quick grasp of not only the rules of basketball stats (which are often arcane), but the philosophy behind them.
