Quick question on 5 second count for closely guard NCAA Women:

Does closely guard apply all over the court or just FRONT COURT?

Is there a 10 second backcourt count for women?

No 10-second count.

We did experiment with a 10 second backcourt count this year in scrimmages. Hopefully we won't have to change to that....

This actually came up in discussion today during our pregame. I really hope that that it doesn't happen either. I can only imagine how many coaches are going to get upset when this situation happens:

After a made basket and before the ball is thrown in, the shot clock is reset and allowed to start counting down from the new 30. However, the new T doesn't start the 10 second count until it is possessed by a player in bounds (and the shot clock is at 27-28). When the shot clock shows 20, the coach for the defensive team will be going nuts, but the T will only have a count of 7-8 on the play...

We all know that not all shot clock operators are the best at handling the shot clock after a made basket, and this will only add another wrinkle in the mix.

Fix it. Under today's rules. Under "tomorrows" (potential) rules.

I'm hoping they don't make this rule change. I like the game the way it is. It even leads to some interesting coaching strategy against teams that press. Like I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

what is the rational for not having the 10-second count for women? I had someone ask me that this past weekend and I didn't have an answer for him.

With the shorter shot clock anyone that can keep a team in the back court for 10+ seconds is going to have a definite advantage. I have no idea if that has anything to do with the lack of a 10 second rule.
