Mechanics Poll

Fun debate about mechanics from this weekend. I want to see if I'm the only one who fails.

3 man, where does U1 stand during pre-game?

Behind the R, holding his Gatorade.

BEAREF Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:14pm

across the court from the home bench area observing the visiting team

Raymond Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:16pm

Observing the home team's warmups. U2 handles visiting team.

Could not have been a debate amongst veteran officials.

tref Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:18pm

Now thats funny!! 2 vets immediately disagree.

Adam Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:20pm

According to the IAABO book, U1 watches the visitors.

So are you watching the team warming up or on the bench side? And if so, do you switch at half time?

rwest Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:25pm

Georiga Doesn't Use IAABO Mechanics

U1 watches home team warm-up just like in two man. U2 gets visitors.

Oh, my dear IAABO. And different from the NFHS manual for the sake of....

?

VaTerp Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:26pm

Around here U1 stands opposite the table observing the home team warmups.

Curious to see where this goes.....

U1 observes the home team's warmup. U2 observes the visiting team's warmup. R scans the crowd for hot moms.:D

Pregame has nothing to do with what bench you're in front of.

letemplay Mon Jan 30, 2012 03:34pm

Yes Virginia, they might be up to no good

I heard the VHSL wanted all three in the center jump circle to police the "stay on your side of mid-court" rule:confused:

Never heard that one.

After introducing ourselves to coaches we all stand in front of the table for the anthem/intros. If players get in the circle we simply wave them over to their side of the court.

hmmm

We don't use a 3 man system in most MA HS games (private schools do) until playoffs, but I would just be the last one out of the locker room and stand in the open spot that my partners aren't occupying! :D

So 2 whistle: R across from V bench observing H and U1 across from H bench observing V.

Three whistle: U1 (same as above) across from H observing V and U2 across from V observing H and R still watching out for hot mammas.

What happens at half time?

I think this is what you're saying:

The NFHS manual has the R in 2-person across from the home bench observing the visitors.

In 3-person, U1 observes the home team (across from the visitors bench) and U2 observes the visitors (across from the home bench).

Near the 28-ft. line...

Using NFHS mechanics, the U1 is responsible for the home team. It makes no difference whether it's before the game or at halftime.

So, you tell me what happens at halftime.

zm1283 Mon Jan 30, 2012 09:35pm

Why are some people so preoccupied with the bench? Benches have nothing to do with pregame duties.

3-person: U1 observes home team, U2 observes visiting team, R is at division line

2-person: U1 observes home team, R observes visiting team

Nothing changes at halftime. You still observe the same team, just on the other end of the court.

This is not that difficult.

NFHS and NCAA Men's & Women's: U1 opposite the Visitor's Bench observing the Home Team warmup.

IAABO: U1 opposite Home's Bench observing the Visitor Team warmup.

And, what game are we playing - defend the center jump circle? ;)

We're not preoccupied. I was quoting the NFHS manual, where those words are used.

I think part of the confusion has to do with the position for the tip, relative to the position for the warm up.

U1 chops the clock from the left of the table (when facing the table). For whatever reason, some can't get it through their minds that this might mean U1 and U2 have to "cross" from their positions during the warmup.

They are okay if the home team bench is to the right (when facing) of the table. Then, U1 starts and stays on the left half of the court. But, if the home team bench is to the left of the table, they get all confused.

Sorry, I wasn't really talking about you and some others.

I realize what the manual says, but for practical purposes, it's not really needed. All anyone needs to know is which team you're observing during warmups, and it doesn't change throughout the course of the game.
