Huggy was pretty mellow don't ya think?

The talking heds are saying that by rule, if the ball hits the glass and then is touched, it is goaltending no matter if the ball is on the way up. Can someone with NCAA rules knowledge confirm/deny?

4-34-2. If the ball is entirely above the level of the rim and contacts the backboard, it's considered to be on it's downward flight.

True as long as the ball is above the rim.

"I've done this a long time, and I've never won a game when they didn't call a goaltend on us," WVU coach Bob Huggins told reporters after the game, adding that he had "no doubt" the call was missed.

"Did I think it was (goaltending)? No. I knew it was."

I love watching Huggy get all upset, though. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Missed it was but that sort of play exposes the difficulty of enforcing that rule. It is incredibly difficult to see the exact timing of the two touches (hand vs. board) from out top when they are that close in time. Only the side and up close view makes it clear. The replay from the angle of the C was not obvious.

I've long contended that, at that level, there are many basket interference calls that are missed (and now goaltending situations like this one) because the officials just can't see the objects from the angles needed to be sure.

Exactly, and I'm now of the opinion they may as well make goaltending due to touching the backboard first a reviewable play. It's just extremely difficult to see, and it's as indisputable as whether a player is behind the 3-point line or not. It's not a judgement call, it's a black-and-white call that's difficult to see. Let them go to the monitor.
