I've been thinking about this past high school season, and one game in particular has been bugging me. Soph boys, and home coach has had close calls go the other way. After I whack one of his kids for swearing at me after a foul call, he asks me if it's personal. He asked me the same thing several times the rest of the game. "Is it personal?"
I essentially ignored the question, and finally said "No" when he asked me after the game was over.
Question. Should I have firmly told him to stop asking the quesion after the first time? Or did I handle it correctly?
Or, does the fact that the game went relatively smoothly (aside from having a tired partner who kept getting caught slightly out of position) mean I handled it as well as necessary?
I just don't like the idea that he even tried to make it about him.
Thanks,

Adam

If he's asking quietly, and you can ignore him and it doesn't go any further, then fine. If he's asking loudly enough for others to hear then you simply ask him, "Coach, are you saying I'm cheating for the other team?" or something similar. "Are you questioning my integrity?" sounds a little more confrontational to me. But either one should shut him up.

I think I would have answered the coach if he asked if it was personal. "No coach it was technical"!

If it was being continually asked in response to the T or a series of calls following the T, it seems to me that he is stepping over the bounds. It's just another way of whining about calls. Let him know you have heard enough and then present him with his own personal T for his personal bad behavior.

Then tell him it was just businees, not personal.

Snappy reply, which comes to mind, but I'm NOT recommending:

"Yes, coach, it's personal. Lose the bizarre hair-do and I'll reconsider that last call..."

Try this:

"Soitenly it's poisonal. NYORK, NYORK, NYORK." Make Curly gestures while saying it.

Trust me coach, it's not about you. It's about the other coach, we've been buddies a long time ;)

I'm not sure about this one, but I'm not very experineced either. You could try this out at camp and see what an evaluator thinks!!

No, but it counts against the five needed for him to be disqualified. :D
