To T or not to T

GJV Team A up 3. Team B scores a 2 point bucket and has no TOs left. Clock runs out and buzzer sounds to end the game. A1 claps 5-7 times in B1s face before the crew leaves the floor.

You see this, how do you handle it? I know what the rule says I'm interested in your opinion.

Adam Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:49am

Stupid play; I'm calling it and dealing with the ramifications accordingly. That's taunting.

Now, the odds of me seeing it are prohibitively small.

Immediate T. No need to think about this one.

Report far away from the table because the Team A coach is going to be livid.

Tio Thu Jan 26, 2012 11:57am

Yeah... If you think the act was clearly taunting... you can call a technical foul. Given that it was a HS game I would probably do it since sportsmanship is/should be paramount in HS athletics.

I try not to hang around after the horn sounds to avoid situations like this... but if it happened so close to the expiration of time then get her.

Game is over. Get off the court. Should never be a T!

Nope, it's not.

Some people have to learn the hard way. How about that assistant coach in Illinois last month?

If it's in front of me as I'm leaving, I'm going to call it.

Because I'm jogging off the court immediately, there's a good chance I won't see it.

letemplay Thu Jan 26, 2012 04:52pm

You don't call it and then B1 retaliates with a big ole b____ slap, all hell breaks loose, then watcha got? Maybe the lawsuit no one wants to talk about in another thread!

A lawsuit for something you do not see? I doubt that. I know people want to assume everything is up for legal issues, but it is not known standard that officials get off the court or field after a game was over. And just for the record this is not totally uncommon. There was a fight in a college football game where officials immediately after the game and I have not heard a thing of a lawsuit. We are not responsible for everything that happens. We could give a T and they still fight, so what is the lawsuit going to prove?

Peace

no T from me. doesn't rise to my level of "t-worthy-ness" after the final horn sounds....

How do I call it when my back's to the court jogging to my locker room?

BillyMac Thu Jan 26, 2012 05:28pm

Agree.

Of course, our Forum friends in Massachusetts would definitely see it, since they have to stick around for the post game "love festival". After the game the officials, coaches, and players, all meet in the center circle, light a campfire, sing, "Kumbaya", and finish it off with a group hug. It's true. It's true.

It's Massachusetts. I think they learned this from the hockey officials.

I was responding to OP that said "you see this" and I was also offering up that scenario for discussion. In reality, I'm like most here...not calling it and hoping nothing becomes of it.

If I see it, I'm calling a technical. I'm just saying that I probably won't see it.

When it comes to sportsmanship - especially on the H.S. level - we can't run away from situations. As long as one of us is within the visual confines of the playing area the situation should be dealt with.

As one of the people who taught me once said, we only get in trouble when we don't follow the rule book.

The horn goes, I'm turning my back and jogging to the exit towards my locker room. If I see it I call it, but I'm not spending any time watching the players unless there's a situation already occurring.

I'm not running away from a situation, but I'm not sticking around in case a situation happens either.
