Ok everyone, answer me this!!1 Why when pointing direction in Fed ball are we not allowed to use the 2 finger point like we are in CCA mechanics?

By using the full hand to point, it is much easier to transition your pointing hand into the "T formation".

moose69 Wed May 14, 2003 12:58am

Ok..time for some serious answers.

lol.

Because the FED and NCAA men's rulesmakers are terrified that they will be perceived as "trying to be like the NBA". That's also why the team control foul signals are different in the NCAA men's and women's.

Matt S. Thu May 15, 2003 03:28am

but the 2 finger is still good...

the people who evaluate me in Long Beach, CA are split on the 2-finger vs. full hand. I swear by the 2-finger point in my FED games-maybe becuase I do baseball as well, but more because I simply think it looks a helluva lot sharper than a full hand...crisp, clean, and professional.

Nevadaref Thu May 15, 2003 05:48am

It depends which finger you're using!

Yet another detail?

Since I have my first state association camp in about a week, I suppose I need to ask the silly, obvious question and get clarification...

So, in NFHS I am SUPPOSED to be pointing with the whole hand? I usually point with just my index finger, is that bad?

Yes. Yes.

Fully open hand. Thumb tucked into palm.

Yup, you'll definitely catch some flak for that at camp. Index finger is for pros only (and maybe FIBA, who knows?).

When I had my picture in the paper last year, I was pointing with one finger. The very first thing my assignor said to me when I answered the phone was, "Why were you pointing with one finger?" Fortunately, my usually turtle-slow wit, kicked into high gear, and I replied, "A mom was asking where the bathroom was." I dodged the bullet, but I'm sure you get the point to the story.

NICK Sat May 17, 2003 04:13am

Chuck, with FIBA- one clenched fist, the other hand palm down pointing to offender's waist.

Nevadaref Sat May 17, 2003 08:22am

to the POINT!

New speed up rules. 5 OOB violations and you're out of the game. In preseason trials, games lasted an average of 32 minutes before everyone "fouled" out. Refs really liked it. :D

A Dutch Ref Sat May 17, 2003 04:17pm

Under FIBA, we point with only our index finger... There are some dude's that use 2 fingers instead, but oficially it's only one (which I prefer).

NICK Sun May 18, 2003 04:16am

Dutch ref, pointing with the index finger is personal, intimidating, confrontational and is not in the FIBA mechanics manual.

Nick, I think I would disagree with that. Why is it confrontational? It's the way almost everybody does in real life. I can't imagine how anyone could be intimidated by me pointing with one finger. (Dan can't imagine anyone being intimidated by me, period. :) )

Why do you make that statement? I'm just trying to understand.

Chuck, when the NFHS first put in "bird dogging",they laid out the hand signal as palm down, pointing at the player's waist, etc. They also used the rationale,if I remember correctly, that they didn't want us pointing one finger right at someone for just about the same reasons that Nick listed above, except for maybe "intimidating".Also,if I remember right,"bird dogging" was put in as a direct result of the dumb rule that they had just put in that it was mandatory that a player raised his/her hand when they committed a foul. The "bird-dog" was used so that a player couldn't say that they didn't know that they were the one that had committed the foul.

And I can see the reason for that, b/c you had to point at someone in particular. But in pointing direction after the ball goes OOB, you're not pointing at anybody. You're just saying "that way". I don't see how anybody would take offense at that.

Nick's first post was obviously referring to a foul, and not a direction-i.e. "clenched fist...pointing at the offender...".I think that he was still referring to a foul in his subsequent post. That's why I answered the way that I did.Direction,of course,is different.

ChuckElias Sun May 18, 2003 11:25am

Ah, it makes a lot more sense when you look at it that way!

NICK Mon May 19, 2003 01:24am

Thanks Chuck and J.R., I should have mentioned that my reply did refer to the foul situation. There is definitely no problem pointing with finger to show direction of play

DrakeM Mon May 19, 2003 06:20am

When in Rome......

If your Assoc. lets you point "Pro-style",
do it. If not, Full hand, thumb tucked, is the way to go! :D
