Now that the FED has made the bird-dog optional, how will we give it a proper burial?

:)

Oh, I wouldn't say it's dead. Heck, it's not even being phased out. And certainly not scaled back. . .

Chuck :D

But it is optional starting next year. Which means I won't be using it.

And since I'm a good little official, I *ALWAYS* bird-dogged when calling a foul. And if you believe that, then you probably thought Jane Swift was a great governor, too :)

I hope you are right.

Do you have information that proves this? Website, link, anything?

Peace

Jeff,

I got the WIAA (Wisconsin) bulletin today (a newsletter they send out periodically) that listed the rules changes that have already been on this site. Listed with it are some mechanics changes, and I posted those under a different thread, which shouldn't be too hard to find.

They correspond to sections of the Federation mechanics manual, so I'm assuming these are NFHS changes.

I wish.

I hope this is a change, but over the last few years the Illinois High School Association used some of their own mechanics that were not totally inline with the NF. So I hope they adopt this one.

Virginia made it optional by board last year. Had some problem with it now and then and was call down a few times.

If the foul was out in the open the player knew he/she was being called. When there is a group under the basket and there is lots of contact players do not know who the call was on. Then you have to point to one and ask him/her to turn so you can see the number. That is when some evaluators took exception.

Not to mention some mother who took exception to the fact that you're publicly humiliating her son. "My son doesn't foul!"

A few years ago, I had to have a scorekeeper removed because he wouldn't mark down a technical foul on his son. The kid got the T for profanity. The scorekeeper insisted his son never used profanity. He sat there with his arms folded across his chest and refused to write in the scorebook. I told the coach to replace him. He did. Then, I very loudly instructed the scorekeeper to record the T, and reiterated the reason for it.

The former scorekeeper was fuming.

That was cool.

Mark,
Did he then give you an unapproved hand signal?

I like the change. It has been a challenge to go from the stripped down NCAA mechanics (which I prefer) to the NF mechanics which have always, IMO, been cumbersome and aniquaited. The mechanics have been around for a long enough period of time as standard signals that scorekeepers and coaches should know what we have done without all of the excess signals.

Why can't I find this on the NFHS website. The only thing that looks close to being a mechanices related change is the addition of the kick ball signal.

No, but his face turned so red, it matched the color of his son's jersey.
