Moving Screen
Calling in our youth rec league tonight, specifically the 9-10 girls. I heard a shout from the stands: "Moving screen!" As I looked around, I see the following: This team is playing man to man defense, (I think) and as I look there are 2 matchups 25 feet from the basket where you could honestly not tell by the actions of the players which team had the ball. I had a thought. Leak the news to the fans that screening principals in part apply to both offensive and defensive players.
Now nobody on either team would be allowed to move. |
That would be like explaining the phantom over the back call, 3 seconds when the ball is in the back court and ref you gotta call it both ways when the foul count is 4 to 5. At a 9 and 10 year old level, I'd have even less awareness of the crowd.
I use to do some Saturday morning 5th and 6th grade basketball, sometimes I felt like reminding parents it wasn't the Friday night Varsity game, but there is one quote I heard from a college coach that I will always remember. "Parents don't care what level their kids are playing, it's the biggest deal in their lives at that moment. You can probably determine who their is." I try to think about this when I am working that horrible freshman boys game and all I want to do is get out of there. |
