Second of all, I've done it. I've also called over the back and reaching in; and once, when I was doing my first year of middle school ball in college, I convinced a partner that any player on the court could shoot free throws for an injured player. We all call stupid stuff when we're just starting out.

Third game ever, I called a throw-in violation. I was the non-administering official.

I can tell you the gym, who my P was, and almost tell you the date as well.


I once used "over the back" in a game, only to describe the body movement that caused the foul. It felt weird to say it.

I worked with a guy last year who called that a few times in a game. He gave a signal that looked liked he was diving into a swimming pool.

It happened to me this year. One of the few 3 man games I've had. I'm trail. Girl is 6 feet in front of me. She bobbled the ball for no apparent reason. I didn't see her move her foot at all. I wouldn't have called anything without the bobble. C whistled a travel from across the gym. Only time in 26 years I ever said sh*t out loud (barely) around my whistle.

The call was made by one of the most experienced veterans we have.

Does it matter if she moved her foot during a fumble and subsequent recovery?

Several years ago, twice in the same week, I reached through a crowd to call traveling when I thought the player stood up off of a knee. I can also tell you which gym, which partner, and how quickly I apologized to each.
