Palms up

I'm seeing more of the palms up with arms out to the side after calls. Even on obvious "easy" calls. You guys seeing this? How do you handle it?

JRutledge Sun Jan 01, 2012 04:44pm

Forgive me but not sure what you mean by "Palms up?"

Peace

I just say "what did you say?"

That seems to really diffuse the situation.

Chris Whitten Sun Jan 01, 2012 04:54pm

Sorry. Interpretation is, "Coach, I didn't touch him...I don't know why the stupid ref called that." Maybe its a regional thing. Or worse: only in MY games.:)

Hugh Refner Sun Jan 01, 2012 04:59pm

Oh. You mean the players put their arms out with their palms out. Nope. Haven't seen any more of that than usual.

That is where I was confused. I thought he meant something the official was doing.

Same here, not much different than any other time. I usually tell them to put their arms down and that usually stops it.

Peace

They're doing it because they see others do it and it's not addressed. Address it. Stop it.

(and "address, does NOT mean go right to a T.)

Turn your left palm down and "pop it" on top of your right finger tips.

remember fellas....you promote what you permit.

if you don't address it & stop it, then you must approve of that behavior...so you really can't complain about it.

Like The Tea Nazi Says, "No Tea For You" ...

Sounds like a "What? Me?" shrug. I'm probably going to just ignore it. Which means that I can't complain about it, so I won't.

I'll probably agree with this. Unless it becomes overly demonstrative. Then, I'll deal with it.

When it is excessive, I've been heard to say to the player, "Put your arms down! It's undignified to beg!" That stops it.

Nice Answer
Quick to the point and it tells them to knock it off:)

I don't mind the sincere "What did I do?" I'm happy to explain the call. What I'm seeing is the immediate default to this and the look over to the coach. Coach is already irritated the call went against him, then he gets the player reaction that suggests the call was missed. It can also incite negative spectator reaction. All on a correctly called foul/violation.

bob jenkins Mon Jan 02, 2012 12:56pm

"Coach, I'll be glad to answer a reasonable question about what I called, but I can't have your player showing me up."

Told a player something similar to this directly once when he complained that the kid he fouled wasn't shooting. As I reported the foul, he approached my partner:

Player: "He said we could ask questions."
Partner: "what's your question "
Player: "He wasn't shooting."
Partner: "That's not a question."

Not a word from that player the rest of the game.

That's Right, It Can Happen, Probably Not, But It Can Happen ...

And sometimes the coach says to the player, "Yeah. You fouled him. Next time keep your arms straight up. Now quit whining and get your head in the game", or something along those lines.

Chris Whitten Mon Jan 02, 2012 02:10pm

That's a nice add, BillyMac. But its too early in the new year for me to give coaches any credit.:D

JRutledge Mon Jan 02, 2012 05:37pm

I just tell the players, "You are not in the NBA, when you get more zeros by your name you an do that." The point is usually taken and I do not see it anymore after that. ;)

Peace

In my small area of the world we refer to this as the "Jesus arms." As soon as we see it we address it as showing up the officials and inciting team mates and fans, letting them know that they don't agree with the official's call. We tell the captain and coaches we will not allow players to consistantly do that and we don't want to see it any more. If we do it will warrant an "T" for unsportsmanlike conduct.
