When...

Partner and I are debating. When a dribbler loses control and the ball bounces high, he puts his hand under it but does not dribble it again... I say no violation.

Right or wrong?

If he does not dribble again, what's the violation?

Refsmitty Wed Dec 28, 2011 08:47am

My point exactly.

PG_Ref Wed Dec 28, 2011 08:49am

What is the violation, according to your partner? Just curious.

SNIPERBBB Wed Dec 28, 2011 08:59am

Is this the old high dribble rule?

Refsmitty Wed Dec 28, 2011 09:08am

We're debating it because we can't find reference to the fact that it is not a violation in the books.

We also know that it takes a slow whistle not to call it right away - something we are both working on.

Agree or Disagree: This, and related "high dribble" situations, is often whistled (with one toot; two or three or more toots by those pushing the envelope) on the premise that "it just doesn't look good". No violation involved, but if it looks bad, it must be illegal.

SNIPERBBB Wed Dec 28, 2011 09:14am

What is telling you that it is a violation?

Refsmitty Wed Dec 28, 2011 09:14am

Exactly!

....

So again, what violation does your partner think it is based on the rules you can find?

That was my question ... your partner blows the whistle, what's the call (violation) he signals?

Refsmitty Wed Dec 28, 2011 09:19am

Well said BNR!

Welpe Wed Dec 28, 2011 09:48am

So what you're saying is that your partner thinks it is a violation but has no idea why?

Refsmitty Wed Dec 28, 2011 09:52am

I think we'll both agree now

:d

Was this ever a rule? I only know it as a myth.

I don't think it's an actual rule either. Probably started by the same guy that started the reach and over the back thing...I really hate him.

As in "old wive's tale." Never true, but always believed.

Palming or carrying is when the ball comes to rest in the player's hand, and the player either travels with the ball, or dribbles a second time. There is no restriction as to how high a player may bounce the ball, provided the ball does not come to rest in a player’s hand. Steps taken during a dribble are not traveling, including several that are sometimes taken when a high dribble takes place. It is not possible for a player to travel during a dribble.
