The Waving Santa

I read about a high school game where a kid dressed as Santa stood behind the end line under the basket while the opponents were shooting FTs. He waved and yelled.

I assume it was a gym with a deep end zone area.

If the coach complains is there anything you would do?

Whether the coach complains or not, there's something you can do.

"Beat it, kid."

It's a safety issue.

Depends. If there are bleachers there, he can stand there. If there aren't, then no.

Small gym? Big gym? Small gym, no way I allow this. Safety issue, as others have said.

Big gym, as long as he's way out of the way, I would think that would be a game administration/site management issue.

When he says behind the end line, I picture right behind the end line.

I have chased cheerleaders and their pom poms away before when they tried to do this.

As mentioned, I think it depends on the distance from the endline....5' feet behind the endline may be a safety issue but 15-20' may not be. And some gyms do have that much space or more, even if there are no bleachers. In fact, the gym I worked in tonight had a lot of room off the endline on one end (bleachers on the other end).
