No 3-point line at 19' 9"
A local boys high school tournament is played on a college campus. With the recent change of the women's college 3-point distance, combined with the university installing a new court there is no 3-point line marked at 19' 9" (only one at 20' 9"). Rule 1 Section 4 tells us about the distance of the 3-point line but there is no case book ruling pertaining to the lack of a line. The venue is refusing to put a taped line down for the high school tournament. A girl's tournament held this week had the same issue and used the women's college line.
Has anyone run into a similar situation? If so, what was done to resolve it? |
Really??
If they do this in very big arenas like the United Center or major arenas, why would they hold a tournament and not put the proper line down? That sounds so silly and petty. Peace |

Happens in football all the time when high school games are played at either college or pro venues.
The goal posts are not as wide, nor are the hash marks. Play it as marked. |

Whoever runs the tournament needs to find a venue that has this kind of thing available before trying to get them to conform THEIR court to what they need. |

I had this last weekend on a college court. Neither coach said anything. And of course the game was won with a last second 3-pointer. The kid hit 6 three's, all at least a good 6-12" behind the college arc.

When in Rome.......

A foot isn't really that big of a difference. Personally, I can't believe they didn't move the college line back even more.

I suppose you could give them 3 if the shooter's foot was on the line.

Because of some scheduling situations, our local kids rec league has to play some girls and boys HS games in an old elementary school gym and there's no 3 point line at all. We discussed it with the school district and told them that we would pay to get one painted on the court. They said no, but didn't really give us a reason. So now we're playing some HS games with no 3 point line at all. I worked two games there one night two weeks ago and my hand inadvertently went up quite a few times during the boys games when they took long shots. My partner did the same thing. It's just force of habit, I guess.
