You gain experience and learn:
  • what is a foul and what isn't a foul.
  • what constitutes an advantage or disadvantage
  • what rule governs the play i'm officiating
  • be consistent in your application of the rules
iow, you don't need to "remember" if you call the same play consistently.

Some of my most memorable moments have been total brain-farts from myself or my partners. I remember these well....and they have stuck with me to the extent that they'll never happen again. We learn by our mistakes...and we can only improve by recognizing these mistakes.
