BC or not?

A1 inbounding passes to A2 who jumps from front court catches ball comes down with one foot front court followed by second foot in back court.

BC violation?

Casebook 9.9.1 A calls for a BC violation should A2 catch ball with one foot down in front court followed by second foot in back court. Don't have case book to reference # but throw in caught in air from A2 leaping from frontcourt to backcourt is not back court.

Airborne player may catch and land with either foot first straddling the line.

No violation

Rule 9, Section 9

ART. 3 . . . During a jump ball, throw-in or while on defense, a player may legally jump from his/her frontcourt, secure control of the ball with both feet off the floor and return to the floor with one or both feet in the backcourt. The player may make a normal landing and it makes no difference whether the first foot down is in the frontcourt or backcourt

Thought so, casebook? 9.9.1 E?? Friendly bet, but I wasn't listening to 'while in air' part.

Here's another one to chew on.

A1 dribbling in her front court when she loses possession and B1 gains possession. B1 loses possession and the ball bounces towards A3, who is standing in her backcourt near her division line. A2 tips the ball in the frontcourt before it goes to A3. A3 touches the ball which is still in her frontcourt and begins her dribble. She is standing in the backcourt but dribbling the ball in the front court when the lead blows her whistle for a backcourt violation.

Was the lead correct?

Bonus points if you can guess the level of ball.

Once B1 gained possession, then A's team control ended. The tip by A2 does not reestablish team control, so there is no back court violation. Once A3 touches the ball (if she is standing in her backcourt) the ball has backcourt status, thus the ball cannot still be in the frontcourt. She can begin her dribble and she does not fully have front court status until both feet and the ball are across the division line.

Maybe the key discrepancy here is whether B1 actually gained possession, or if it was really just a loose ball so that A's team control never ended. If that's what happened, then it would be BC.

B1 definitely had possession. Let's just say the trail saw it clearly and was left speechless when the whistle was blown.
