Booking Agent
Our booking agent has been booking many single game assignments lately (in multi-game venues). Never having been a booking agent, I don't understand why this would be preferable. As an official, I would rather call a couple per night and work less nights. Some of you folks who have been BAs care to shed some insight? We are in a metropolitan area, so travel is not an issue.

I just started working for a particular assignor this season. My first game for him, I had a single boy's game. I noticed during the game that two more teams were getting ready to take the court. I asked my partner..."I thought we only had one game, right?"
He said yes that's right. He said this particular assignor does not like to schedule officials for back to back boy's games. Maybe that's the case in your situation? |
Around here (northern Ohio) Girls play Wednesday/Saturday and Boys play Tuesday/Friday.(with exceptions but always separately) At most the schedule will be FR/JV/V. Varsity officials NEVER do more than one game. Some assignors will give the FR/JV officials the double header. Some conferences do have Freshman games on a different day and have B/G doubleheaders.

We have conference assignors, not booking agents (not that I know what that really means anyway). We have so many officials that you do not need to hire one crew to work multiple games, at least not at the HS level. Not if you want your staff to get experience or work with different people. Of course some lower level games are doubleheaders like a Freshman A and B game night on like a Monday. But when you work on varsity nights, all officials usually work one game. And honestly that is the way it should be. It is better for the officials and the kids if you ask me.

In VT, our assignors did not want to have us perceived as JV officials, so we only worked those types of games if we weren't going to see the V teams at all that season. For example, I worked some DI girls' games, but none at the DI boys' level. So, I might do a handful of games in a gym where I would not be seen by DI girls' coaches on a JVB game.
Here in FL, we may or may not have DHs. I had 2 this week and one last week. But, I had probably a half dozen by this point in time last season. It may be an effort to make sure everybody is working, too. Complaints about not getting many games are not like complaints about not getting any DHs. Neither is good, but the second complaint might indicate that the monetary angle is more important than it should be. |

My part of the state the varsity guys only do one game, though some leagues will have just one crew for a girls jv / v doubleheader.

Subvarsity assignmets are usually double headers. Varsity games are usually assigned individually. We are paid mileage here and the schools don't want to pay more than they have to plus we don't have enough officials to have a new set come on for each subvarsity game.

If there's a discount for working both games, many booking agents will send a crew for each game. |

No doubleheader "discounts". All varsity game fees are $88.28 for each official. All subvarsity game fees, all the way down to middle school games, are $57.25 for each official. No mileage. |

Varsity games are always played girls/boys double header with 3 officials. Occasionally 1 of the JV refs is a varsity ref and works the 2 Varsity games as well as the single JV game. |

Here in my area of SoCal we assign crews a maximum of two games. For instance my school is a JV/Var only school. So on nights where everyone is together two officials get the JV Girls and JV Boys games while another crew comes in and does the varsity games. During our tournaments the first two days are 4 crews (2 man) and last week in our girls tourney they sent us three crews on the last day (1 for 7'th and 5'th place games,1 for the third place game, and another for the final). For the boys tourney they sent us two crews on the last day (1 did 7'th and 5'th place games, the other 3'rd and Final).
