"Tuck your hair in your shirt!"

There's one I've never heard before.

MS girls. One girl had long, thick, blonde hair that was covering her number. At the earliest dead ball, I went to the coach, saying she needed a sub.

"Hey (name), tuck your hair in your shirt!"

That'll probably be one of my favorite lines of the year, but we still needed a sub. (Had it been travel or rec, I could allow that.) A few minutes later, she came back with her hair in a bun.

Still, that line sticks with me. I can't believe there's any rule against tucking your hair in your jersey (unless I missed something). I can't imagine there's any safety factor involved. Anyone know anything about this?

That's something no one would ever have to say to me. It would be a prerequisite to actually have hair to make that a relevant command. :)

Where's the rule support for this?

If you think its a safety concern 3-6-7 applies.

I don't know of one. Unless she has beads on her hair. May as well tell the players to stand behind the division line for tech free throws.

Do you mean 3-7?

If that is the case I'm not sure what hair has to do with safety?

Peace

There is none.

Okay, this will really show my age ... Years ago, it might have been a Points of Emphasis entry, in the interest of safety, the officials could direct a player to restrain his/her long hair, particularly a long braided ponytail. I don't have the particular year for specific reference. One of the reccomended methods to restrain the hair was by tucking it into the back of the jersey.

Rut got the NFHS Rules reference correct and Rob1968 is correct about a Points of Emphasis from years gone by. As I stated in a post in a different thread last night, my knees are not going up in the attic this morning but it seems to me that the POE addressed long hair. I am sure that NevadaRef will soon post the POE of which Rob spoke.

Yeah its 3-7...had a ugly game last night.

I don't see hair that long being a problem but somewhere some OOO probably would think it is a hazard.

I'm confused, as usual.

When I first read this, I thought you sent her out because you couldn't read her number. I would agree with whoever asked, "Where's the rules support for this?"

Others seemed to focus on the safety aspect. Here, I agree that it's your judgment.

Was there no number on the front of the jersey?

I don't understand why people feel the need to do things that they have absolutely no basis for... Where in the rule book does it say that having long hair or obscuring a player number with said hair is illegal? This is the sign of an OOO or a plumber. Or both.

I remember a similar ruling at one time, but I do not remember it was simply for long hair, it was more for heave braids. It appears here they wanted to just remove someone because they had long hair covering up the jersey. That was a little before you see a lot of men wearing long hair in football games and I would not feel that interpretation is still valid or it is a stretch to apply now.

Peace

I'm pretty sure this would result in an uncomfortable conversation with any one of my assigners.
