Score the basket, or waive it off.

Addendum, perhaps?

Point to spot of the violation (the rim or thereabouts)
Then score the basket, or waive it off.

That is subject to local standards or if anyone cares. I have found no one cares so I have seen this done several times.

Peace

unless you have a different local standard or if anyone really cares what the NFHS mechanic is.

There, I fixed it.

Why would you point at the basket?

Officials' Manual 2.4.1, re. when a violation occurs:

B. Procedure: When a violation is observed by an official, a specific procedure
and mechanic must be followed:
1. Give a single sharp blast of your whistle and fully extend one arm above
the head with fingers extended to stop the clock.
2. Move toward the area of the violation, stop and signal the nature of the
violation.

Without any specific NFHS signal specified, it seems logical to point to the spot of the violation. Sorta like when the freethrower's shot missed the rim. Point to the rim. Or a player steps out-of-bounds. Point to the spot he touched or went over the line. Or a player violates by stepping over the OOB line onto the court. Point to where that happened. Et al.

Though not real clear, it seems that's what the faceless Mr. Pictograph Guy #26 might suggest.

. . . unless there's another local standard or nobody cares . . .

Great reference but there's nothing there that says to point to the rim, anymore than there's anything in the manual that says to point at the floor at the spot of a traveling or double dribble violation.

I just blow my whistle and announce "violation, shooter".
