Fox 40 Whistles with rubber mouth grip

Question for anybody who uses the Fox 40 Whistle that has that rubber-like bite guard/mouth grip -

I find that I bite through the grip and the grip starts to fall apart over the span of a season. The whistle itself is fine. Instead of having to buy a new whistle, has anybody found a way to replace the rubber mouth grip?

JRutledge Mon Nov 14, 2011 07:06pm

I really do not like those whistles. I also use multiple whistles in a season. Those whistles hardly last a few games without being annoying.

Peace

I tried the "rubber" Fox 40 last year for several games, and had the same problem as Dave9819. Eventually, I went back to the "regular" fox 40.

Holy crap! You guys need to relax a little when you work games. I still have several Fox 40 CMG's from five years ago. What are you guys grinding your teeth about?

And 1. I have used the same 2-3 whistles with the mouthguard for the last 3 years now and they've held up fine. Ironically, I have to wear a mouthguard when sleeping because I grind. Can't figure that one out at all.

Idk of anyone that has had this problem and actually replaced the mouthgrip. Idk if its even possible Mr. Forte may have designed it so you have to buy a new one

The plastic is fragile. If you bite them at all they fall apart. Also those things get nasty after some time, which is why I would rather not use them.

Peace

I have never had a need to replace the rubber CMG portion because I don't bite through them very easily. I think I'm in in 5th year of using a set of 6 whistles and they're all in near perfect condition.

Stop biting through the CMG portion.

Agreed. I've got 3 or 4 I rotate. Haven't bought a new in in several years.

Relax.

I hate the CMG whistles. I have used the same Fox 40 Classic for the past 2 basketball seasons. I clean it out once in a while, but that's it.

Well, I hate the Fox 40 Classic! So there!

And my patent leather shoes aren't hot either! :D

Some of you guys have some strange idiosyncrasies.

It's called personal preference. :)

I use Fox40 classics for basketball and CMGs for football. I can't stand having the CMG whistle in my mouth all the time. I'm good for about one CMG whistle a football season and I guess about two basketball season for a Fox40 whistle. I bit through my last one at the end of the season, I guess I chew on them too much.

Love the 40 CMGs...

This just in....THEY ARE CHEAPER THAN AN ORDER OF WINGS AT FRIDAYS!!

No repair..just use 3 rotated and they will last a few seasons. When they fall apart...pitch and buy some new ones.

Small diameter black rubber tubing. Cut to fit. Works fine.

+1 I do the same. I have several that I just rotate, and I clean them out on a regular basis.

I have same problem with chewing up the rubber.

I use the CMG when I have a long day of officiating (more than a doubleheader) and the regular Fox 40 for my doubleheaders.

jTheUmp Tue Nov 15, 2011 10:03am

I use the CMG whistles... I go through about 2 a season... about 50 games apiece, give or take.

I don't rotate them, I use one until the grip wears out, then I replace it with a new one.

At $6/whistle, that means the whistle costs me about $0.12/game.... hardly worth worrying about.

Do you bite the whistle, or do you hold it with your lips? Methinks that holding it with the lips would make the cushion last longer.... I'm a biter though.

What flavor?

If you guys didn't marinate your whistles in BBQ sauce before games maybe you could lay off. I personally enjoy mine broiled with a side of twice baked potatoes!

I do wish they would use black rubber as opposed to the "clear" rubber.

Is that an idiosyncrasy?

Probably.

I have enough Fox 40s in my bag to last the rest of my career, probably. Every clinic/camp I go to gives me a whistle. Gee, thanks.

I tried using an Acme Thunderer metal whistle for football and I didn't like it. Had to blow it out of the front of my mouth to get good sound out of it, and I was too used to a Fox 40 from using one for so long. So I gave those away.

Rufus Tue Nov 15, 2011 01:18pm

I use the Fox 40 Classic and have used the same one for the last 5 years. Run it through the dishwasher every once in a while and it's fine (yes, carry a backup in games and have never had to use it). I tried the CMGs and didn't care for it at all.

:D:D:D Thats kinda what I was thinking lol

SE Minnestoa Re Tue Nov 15, 2011 02:23pm

I use a standard Fox 40 for both football and basketball. Even the hard plastic has all kinds of teeth marks on it. I can only imagine what the soft plastic would look like:D

Blindolbat Tue Nov 15, 2011 04:35pm

All it took for me was one time a player and I didn't see each other and collided while my teeth were on the hard plastic whistle. Chipped a couple teeth. :( Hold it in my lips all the time now. Don't think biting through rubber is gonna be a problem.

constable Thu Nov 17, 2011 02:11am

I have a bag of whistles in my jacket pocket. Most are CMG. I grind my teeth a lot so I find the CMG is more comfortable for me to use.

I might buy 2 new whistles a year to help save my teeth.

Also, the inventor of the whistle is a member of our board and has a lot of insight into the game so I don't really mind shelling out a whopping 12 dollars.

grunewar Thu Nov 17, 2011 07:39am

I keep several Fox 40's (with mouthguard) in rotation.

I soak them regularly in mouthwash (yum) and have never bit through one yet.

I don't care for the ones without the mouthguard personally, and the only time I use one without a rubber tip is when my pink whistle comes into play.

+1. I even searched the net for Pink whistles with CMG because I prefer them so much. Found them and bought several as I always have partners forgetting about pink whistle week.

Many, here in my little corner of Connecticut, have no problem remembering to use their pink whistles, they just have a problem remembering to send in their cancer donation checks. It's freaking unbelievable.
