Traveling ?

Talked with our HS coach the other day and he had a situation (he was sitting on JH bench as assistant) that he wanted clarification. Player A picks up dribble, loses balance and uses the ball to "catch herself". She bent over and touched ball to floor (did not release ball, nor did anyother body part touch floor) and was able to push off the floor with the ball and stand up . Question is : Is that a travel ? I told him no but I said I would post here to be sure.

thanks

No travel, assuming they didn't move the pivot foot beyond prescribed limits. The player could do this (hold the ball and touch it to the floor) as many times as he/she wanted.

You Can Look It Up ...

4.15 COMMENT: It is not possible for a player to travel during a dribble. A player
is not dribbling while slapping the ball during a jump, when a pass rebounds
from his/her hand, when he/she fumbles, or when he/she bats a rebound or pass
away from other players who are attempting to get it. The player is not in control
under these conditions. It is a dribble when a player stands still and bounces the
ball. It is not a dribble when a player stands still and holds the ball and touches
it to the floor once or more than once.

The only way to travel while not moving the pivot foot is to touch the floor with something other than the feet or hands. The ball doesn't count.
