Hope everyone saw the Tracy MacGrady play on SportsCenter. He dribbled down the court and then tossed the ball off the board to himself for a catch and dunk.
I post this since we had a thread a while back about whether or not this play is legal. It is in the NBA. Of course, that means squat for NFHS or NCAA, but it seems that we will be seeing this play more frequently in the coming years at all these levels.

It is legal.

But I said the same thing when UNLV did it against Duke in the 1990 NCAA Finals. I have not seen it that much since. I think it is difficult to do and you need the right time and position to pull it off.

Peace

Why would this not be legal in HS/ncaa?

ChuckElias Thu Apr 10, 2003 08:58am

Bart, here's the discussion that we had about this:

I've seen the same play three times in the NBA in the past week.

It is legal, Bart. It's just one of those plays that some people don't like and, therefore, don't think it's legal.

That would be a double negative. Oooh, this isn't the English Forum is it?

I think what you intended to say was because they don't like it, they think that it is illegal.

Mr. Grammar Guy ignored this obvious faux-pas, b/c it seemed more like a brain cramp than a genuine mistake. Tony wrote "don't like" and then accidentally stuck another "don't" in front of "think". Mr. Grammar Guy will let you take the easy ones, DT!! :D

With al due respect to Mr GG & DTTB, I believe Tony made a puctuation mistake. Here is how I think he meant it to be written:

Very powerful construction, if you ask me.

I have no idea what Al's puctuation mistake has to do with this thread.

Actually, If Tony stands by what he wrote, then he didn't make any mistakes. He just wanted to be clever, and strategically place commas. Therefore, "don't think it's illegal" simply means, "think it's legal".

My wife gave me a strategically placed coma once. I didn't wake up until 3 days later!

Bart Tyson Thu Apr 10, 2003 04:55pm

Chuck, look above, your eyes missed the second "m".

Are you a Senator

Depends on what is, is.

The only difference between a coma and a comma is the length of the pause.
