Just a point of clarification on 3 seconds:

1) Shot goes up and A5 gets the rebound and holds ball for over 3 seconds while both feet in lane...3 second Violation?

2) A2 passes to A5 in lane..A5 is dribbling and trying to create opening for over 3 seconds. 3 second violation?

3)A4 is in lane with one foot outside the lane and one foot inside lane, for over 3 seconds...3 second violation?

Not enough information to answer. 2 is probably NOT a violation, but it depends on what you mean by "trying to create opening."

What is your confusion about this play?

My real question is can an offensive team member who has the ball stay in the key for more than 3 seconds, without committing a 3 second violation.

The intent of the three-second rule is to not allow an offensive player to gain an advantage. There is no three-second count between the release of a shot and the control of a rebound, at which time a new count starts. There is no three-second count during a throwin. There is no three-second count while the ball is in the backcourt. There is a three-second count during an interrupted dribble. Allowance shall be made for a player who, having been in the restricted area for less than three seconds, dribbles in or moves immediately to try for goal.

Sure, if s/he's moving to try for goal. And, in practice, that phrase (or whatever the actual rule book phrase is) is interpreted broadly -- almost any attempt to look at the basket or fake a defender will be viewed as moving to try. Of course, if the player then passes the ball s/he needs to immediatley move out of the lane or risk a violation.

Unless I have a brain fart, that player is getting a 3-second call every time. Once they've gone beyond 3 seconds and have used the allowance, the situation is going to end one of 3 ways...a shot, a violation, or a timeout.

Maybe by rule, but by actual practice I see bob's way more often.

Agree. As soon as that post player, who has been in the lane for more than three seconds, passes the ball to another player, I'm sounding my whistle.

Sit 1 = Yes
Sit 2 = Yes
Sit 3 = Yes

Are you sure about that partner? Every time? If A5 dribbles in the lane for three seconds, and then makes a move to the basket, and then trys for goal, it is not a three second violation.
