Good Sayings/Philosophies

What are some of your favorite sayings/philosophies toward officiating??

Ex:

- Assistant Coaches are pencil pushers (in context of only speaking to the HC).
- Position is the key to making the call, not judgement.
- and so on....

You Asked For It ...

You are where you were until you get where you're going. (player location)
Must have something in and nothing out. (returning inbounds)
Last to touch, first to touch. (backcourt)
Fumble, dribble, fumble. (legal)
Dribble, fumble, dribble (illegal)
Must sit a tick, don’t have to play a tick. (substitution)
There's a difference between being tripped, and tripping. (foul, no foul)
Over the back isn't, on the back is. (no foul, foul)
Accidental isn't always incidental. (contact)
Redirect, impede, displace, dislodge (illegal post play)
Rhythm, speed, balance, quickness (hand-checking foul)
Pass, shoot, start a dribble, or request a timeout. (player with ball on floor)
White, black, beige or school color. (headbands, wristbands, sleeves)
When in doubt, don't be. (call it only if you’re sure)
When the ball is dead, we must be alive. (timeout mechanics)
Prevent if we can, enforce if we must. (three seconds)
Answer questions, not statements. (communication with coaches)
Bounce when you can, hand when you must. (throw-in)
Don’t be a ball watcher. (officiate your primary)
Move to improve. (court coverage)
Anticipate the play, not the call. (be patient)

Wait, you said "toward officiating."
Never mind.

A great pre-game..."Don't **** up."

just another ref Sun Sep 11, 2011 08:13pm

That looked like a foul/violation, but if my partner can't call it from there, no way can I call it from here, and I really shouldn't have been looking over there anyway.

This one can cause quite a stir depending on who you say it to! I used it to a coach who believed he was the Gods gift to coaching. He didn't understand and demanded an explanation. I told him I would speak to him during a dead ball if he had questions. The dumbass took a time out and used the whole minute *****ing about my no calling a 3 second violation and my response to him.

His loss I guess.

I should have used a smiley face, ofcourse, you would never want to say this to a coach.

I have heard officials say that to a coach and it worked to shut them up. I am not sure that I would use "never" in this situation. ;)

Peace
