Longtime Denison (Texas) High School boys basketball coach Earl Carson has resigned after promising his players he would give them a dollar each time they took a charge.

IMO, what he did is nothing compared to all the shenanigans that take place in amateur athletics. He didn't pay them for hard fouls. It's for playing good defense. Did he do wrong? Yes. But I'd have to call this one a "ticky-tack".

They've taken leave of their common sense!!!

(unless there is more behind this)

What's next? Bobby Knight paying his players to get technicals?

DrakeM Tue Mar 25, 2003 04:45pm

IMO the only thing he did wrong is violate some amateur rule.
What's wrong with motivating your kids to play good defense?

Interesting...my HS coach (way back when) used to give us McDonald's certificates for a milkshake for game stats (leading the team in assists, steals, etc)...never thought there was anything wrong with it then...not sure I see anything wrong with it now...

Mike Burns Tue Mar 25, 2003 05:10pm

Rocky beat me to it. I was going to ask if it would be wrong to, say, buy a shake, burger, or a Humm-V for each charge taken...:D

That's what I say. How many of the elite players every year are given stuff by the shoe manufacturers? Who paid for LeBron James' high school team's trvel expenses? Does this mean when I buy treats for my daughter's 4th grade team after a win they now lose their amateur status?

DownTownTonyBrown Tue Mar 25, 2003 05:57pm

There is no end to stupidity

Is our society really that moronic? This is really hard to believe. And the coach is being contrite! This is ridiculous/dispicable.

I wonder if the kids feel like PROFESSIONALS now that they have each EARNED their 2 or 3 dollars.

ChuckElias Tue Mar 25, 2003 07:40pm

The coach should just say, "I worded it poorly. I meant that I'd pitch in a dollar toward the end-of-year pizza party for every charge". No one would bat an eye at that, would they?

Does not surprise me.

Ya know, Texas is like it's own country. :D

Peace

What if the official gives the player $1 for each charge he takes?!! :D Would these players lose their eligibility? Would the official?

RefSouthAlb Wed Mar 26, 2003 12:05pm

Incredible,

In this day and age of being PC(Politically Correct) this has to take the cake.

To string out a coach like that is crazy.

His school and board should have gotten behind him a supported him. (Unanimously accepted his resignation letter) No money changed hands.

If the board had any guts, they would rehire him on the spot.

Here's a question.

Say an uncle of a player says. $1 dollar for every point 10 points in a game.

Does that contravene the amatuer status of a player.

In Texas it probably does.

Wow, I hope they did the right thing and followed that up by revoking the players' amateur status. I'm going to guess that they'll be ineligible for the NCAA now. :(

This situations smacks of some school board member(s) who want this coach out and are looking for any dirt they can find to accomplish their objective. What a joke. Denison High School board members and administration, stand up, be proud?!, and then stamp stupid across your foreheads for such a ridiculous move.

Hey, why stop there? Let's put the school on probation. Come to think of it, maybe even the district conference where they play ought to be on probation. And, of course, kick the school out of the TX state tournament for a couple of years. That'll show 'em....

Or, maybe we can use common sense and look at the substance of the issue rather than its form.... NAH...

Just my thoughts,
