I posted the story of what happened in an Oregon boys 4A playoff game the other day, when a Jefferson player dunked during warmups, South Medford made one of two free throws to start the game and then South Medford won the game by one point.

Last night, South Medford played Hillsboro and lost by one point! With the game tied in the final seconds, a Hillsboro player attempted a jump shot and was fouled. He made the first, then intentionally (the story said it was obvious, and he confirmed after the game) missed the second so the ball would be batted around and the clock would run out - which is what happened. He didn't want to take the chance of South Medford getting the ball and a timeout to set up a successful last minute play, because that's what they did at the end of the previous game.

Now for the good part. After the game, the South Medford coach said, "There was no call there whatsoever. It's disappointing to lose on that call."

I didn't see the game, but I spoke with two people who did and they say the kid got hacked right across the arm and it was an easy call.

I guess that coach doesn't mind it when a call goes his way in a game he wins by a point, but he does when a call goes against him in a game he loses by a point. As Gomer Pyle would say, "Surprise, surprise, surprise".

Who much time was on the clock when he shot the FTs? Sounds like it wasn't more than a second or two.

And it sounds like South Medford wasn't in the bonus. If they were, that strategy could have backfired on them. Miss the FT then an aggressive Hillsboro rebounder wants to keep the ball alive and fouls on the rebound.
Got to the other end, knock down two and the game's over.

I agree with you're assessment of the coach. I'm surprised he didn't say, "The referees should let the players decide the game."

Exact same scenario last night in a WA game involving the Prairie boys (from here in Vancouver) team in Tacoma...Prairie kid gets fouled with 1.6 seconds to go in a tie game (last second shot attempt also)...makes the first, purposefully misses the second - with coach yelling at him to do so - and clock runs out...only difference is the Snohomish (another Native American term meaning "the BoSox suck really, really bad")coach who lost said it was the right call and had to be made whether it went against his team or not...

Hopefully a coach employing this strategy (a good one if less than two seconds are left and the lead is one, IMHO) is smart enough to pull his players off the lane to prevent a rebounding foul.

Hey Chuck... we can't catch a break anywhere can we??? Well all you doubters, just wait and see what happens this year... That is if we can get our new GM's mom to let him stay up past his bedtime...

Just be glad you don't have the Expos...

Coach Bone from Snohomish is a class act. Officiating Snohomish games is always enjoyable. In today's local paper, even the Snohomish player who committed the foul said, "it was a foul." Good sportsmanship starts with the coach and works it's way down to the players.

Here in Portland, there has been a movement to get the Expos. One of the local Native American tribes offered to build a new stadium in exchange for the rights to operate a casino in the Portland area off tribal land. Just yesterday, our governor said he wouldn't support that.

Gee - maybe we can just trade the Jailblazers for the Expos. Of course, we'd have to send cash to make up for Montreal getting Rasheed Wallace.

Although Rasheed hasn't been in the news lately. After that last flap where he yelled at a ref in the parking lot after a game, he was suspended for seven games. The Blazers won FIVE of those!! He hasn't been nearly as cocky since then!

Er, did I say Rasheed Wallace? I meant Bonzi Wells, who just got suspended by the team for one game for arguing with the coach during a practice. Sheesh! :p

Ya, but you know what?

When the Red Sox win the World Series, it **WILL** be the biggest party around in major sports.

That is, of course, until the Leafs win the Cup about 6-7 months later. Then, that will be the *BIGGEST* party ever, in the history of the world.
