And what is reported to the table? Player A1 has position on the rebound and goes up. Player B1 goes up from behind and initiates contact when reaching for the ball. No "over the back" call, I understand that, but, you (and I) would call a foul on B1 for....what...what foul call do you make here...on the arm? blocking foul?

thanks for the advice...

I would call it a push. It could also be called hacking. The reality is that it almost doersn't matter...its a personal foul in anyone's book.

I don't think you could ever call this a block. It is usually a push because the contact generally is such that it displaces the player with inside position. If the arm is taken out but the player is not displaced, a hack is a good call.

May be there is no foul to call. Did the contact put A1 at a disadvantage? If not no call.

If yes, then I call a push unless there is a hold or a hack at the same time. Blocking???, can't see it.

In all my life I have NEVER heard it called this. Can only imagine if I were to report "Illegal use of hands" to the table, somebody would ask, "do they get the down over?"

I never say anything at the table, I just signal the foul. So I would not say "reach, illegal use of hands or hack." I would just signal and only verbalize the number of the offender and what we are going to do after the foul. But that is just me.

Peace

It's me, too. I report the color and number, signal, and get out.

Question Reason for doing this.

Tony, I do not know if this the reason you only signal but here is my reason. I was always told early in my career that if you say "push" or "hack" for example, you give the coach an opportunity to say, "no he did not!" Is that the reason you do that or was that just a lame excuse to not say what kind of foul it was?

Peace

In Iowa, we used to have 6-player basketball for girls. Essentially a glorified version of 3 on 3. Not, thankfully, since I've been officiating. But in that game, it was illegal for a girl to touch the ball while being held outside the lane. I believe the call was, "Illegal use of the hands."
I don't remember if the penalty included an automatic first down or not.
