Looking at various officials gear web sites, I keep seeing compression shorts and compression shirts. What are these? And under what circumstances would I want to wear them?
|
Dude, where did you say you lived? ;)
Compression shorts and shirts are made of lycra, much like bicycle shorts. They keep the moisture away from your body, which prevents the skin from becoming irritated or chafed. Cotton undershirts and shorts absorb perspiration right against your body. Come out of the Dark Ages, partner! :D |

They also work quite well for keeping your shirt tucked in and come in really handy when (or if) your pants split. That's assuming you have the black compression shorts.
|
These items are for old, fat people who need them to support their blubber. :D
Those who are young and strong don't need to compress anything on their bodies in order to work a basketball game. |

I have tried compression shorts, but I over-heat and absolutely do not like 'em. mick |

I wear compression shorts and ankle length tights. I like the feeling that everything is in place and the warmth that the tights provide. Keeps muscles loose. Have done it since my mid-20s. |

I'm there w/ ya long compression tights and I have found the short sleve compression shirts fromMc David or Under Armour work really well to keep your upper body warm and sweat free. Also helps keep your Jersey tucked in. |

There is some literature that does indicate compression shorts can reduce (other than patella) injuries. Supposedly, the compression material holds the muscles in place while they relax. When the muscles contract again, they don't have to take up any slack. It also helps to keep the muscles warmer thus increasing blood flow. I mainly wear them for running but don't care for them on the court. Being mostly Irish, my kneecaps are safe from everything but my elbows.

Try wearing a wrestling uniform. Of course, you may need a little help adjusting it.
