Quick Question:

player takes what is clearly meant to be a shot at the basket, it goes airball, he or she grabs the ball on it's way down, the ball having touched nothing in the air. Is it traveling (player has taken steps while ball in the air). I believe it used to be, but now has changed, and if it is a legitimate shot it is not traveling.

Thanks for the help, it has happened twice this year in out church league, called 2 different ways, just want a final answer.

(having re-read above, I now realize that the fact that it has happened twice indicates the really low quality of basketball we play, but hey, we have fun)

the confusion is that your refs are watching NBA games, which is the only place that it IS a travel to catch your own air ball.

Everyone is correct. If the official judges that it was a shot attempt, then the shooter can certainly catch the ball again even if it doesn't strike iron. Remember that by definition, player and team control ends on a shot.
