As much as this is a black eye for the county involved I cannot believe (well yes I can) the statements of blame from other school districts and parents for turning this “into such a big deal.”

It's pretty much like the story states. If a student misses more than 13.5 days in the sring semester, he/she would not be eligible to compete the next fall. Some schools were not as adamant as they should have been in checking attendance. There's no way of knowing, at this point, how many schools will be affected.

One school reported on Monday to the NCHSAA that they had an ineligible player and would be unable to participate in the state basketball tournament that started Monday. The player had transfferred fropm another school. On Tuesday, they were able to determine, from records at the previous school, that the player had met the attendance requirement. Fortunately, they had a bye on Monday night and they would have been out of the tourney. They will play tonight.

It's just unfortunate for the kids who play by the rules to be punished for the administration's mistakes.

Several coaches and athletic directors have blamed the school district in the local media for failing to teach them how to accurately keep track of their athletes' attendance.

"How come the three schools without any violations knew how to do it?" Grier said. "Really, the information was very accessible. We collected the attendance records from all 14 schools within two and a half hours."

Wha? When did taking attendance & keeping records become rocket science?
