While watching a local girls playoff game an official that was clearly mechanically sound used a signal to one of the other officials that used the pinky and thumb (only) extended with a rocking motion of the hand up and down. I asked a seasoned ref that was there if he new what it meant and he didn't. Anyone here? We were speculating that it might have been and invitation for after ther game drinks or...

My guess is that it is a common sign used in Hawaii which means "hang loose." You see this motion very often everywhere in the hawaiian Islands.

Index and Pinky raised?!?...I saw that once at a Motley Crue concert....

I watched a boys varsity game recently where the referee was standing about mid-court during a time out exchanging signals with the scorekeeper. I assume he was inquiring about the foul count (bonus) and remaining timeouts. Are there "standard" signals for this? Seemed pretty efficient to me.

Index & pinky? Two outs, play's to first infield.

It's not an NFHS mechanic, but I use that to notify my partner that the bonus situation applies. If I give the "hang loose" shake with both hands, we have bonus both ways.

I use that same signal for one and one and catch crap for it all the time....probably what he/she was trying to relay.

Around here it means the game is getting kinda wiggy.

It was like Dundee's water buffalo shake except last night the pinky and thumb were pointed in front of the ref with the thumb on top and pinky on bottom. Sure looked like he was inviting to go sip some suds or?

Sometimes, when we are flying, if the airplane engine is running we can't here the telephone (or much else) and we use a signal like this to let one of the crew that they have a phone call by putting that same signal up to the ear. Could have been that one of the officials needed to use the phone and the other told him to wait until the game was over. Just specualtion of course.

I agree with Ron.

Whistle blows, mechanics, reporting," you are looking good" then you dash down to the other end of the court only to be reminded by the table's repeatedly loud horn signaling to you one and one.

I hate that and that is a pet peeve of mine when dealing with a crew. You should always use good communication with each other and be aware of the team foul situation for possible bonus and be certain of either one-and-one or double bonus to prevent any correctable error situations!

Hang loose
 

The hang loose sign is made with the thumb and pinky, not the index finger and pinky. Just want to keep the brethren informed.

The "CORRECT" Hook 'em sign has the pinky and index fingers extended with the thumb, middle, and ring fingers tucked under.

I personally like to notify my partner of the fact that the next foul will be bonus by giving the FIBA signal 6,signifying 6 teams fouls..similarly signalling 9 fouls before double bonus.
