FREE THROWS
What do you think about entering the restricted area before the time and before the ball has left the hands of the free throw shooter???
I saw so many refree's that do nothing about that..
what do you think about this call?and why we don't like this call?!
p.s
i'm back!!...

This call was complicated slightly when we started bouncing the ball to the thrower from the L.

There can be no violation until the ball is at the disposal of the thrower. Thus, if there is movement between the time you throw the ball and the thrower controls it, you blow, retrieve the ball and readminister the throw. Once the thrower is in control of the ball, illegal movement is penalized. Right?

Leaving a lane space before the ball hits the rim/backboard is done for only one reason: to get an advantage. We should all be calling this whenever we see it. If we make this call early in the game, we won't have to make it at the end.

The problem is that we all feel bad if we call it more them 3 times in a game...
but we agree that the officials don't like to call it?

Dueling arms...

It seems to happen more with girls then boys- where the opposing players on the lane try and put their arms/hands above the others as they stand waiting for the freethrow shooter to shoot. I usually say "knock it off" and that helps, but just wondering if you guys have a suggestion?

I understand that we could call a violation or even a "T", but upon whom? They both are doing it, and it's kind of petty.

How's this for being emphatic: I will absolutely, positively, without hesitation make the violation call. I don't care if it's the first free throw of the game, or comes at the end of a still-tied triple overtime for the tournament championship (although my personal rules do not permit overtimes )

If I don't, then I, not the actions of the players, am determining the outcome of the game.

Then how about this, Romano. "Valentine's Day is over, ladies. You'll have to hold hands on someone else's time."

Your first and and third declaaitive sentences are correct. But your second declarative sentence is incorrect. You do not blow the ball dead and readminister the free throw. As long as players are where they belong before the free thrower receives the ball nothing has happened. That is you have nothing until you have something.

I was in a loud gym a few weeks ago.

I was lead and had just backed out after bouncing the ball to the free throw shooter.

The two girls on the end of the lane were jostling -- as much as you can while staying in the lane -- getting arms near each other, etc.

JUST AS the gym gets quiet, I LOUDLY say, "Knock it off." It was very audible.

I could hear quite a few people laughing in the stands. Even one of the coaches was smiling when I looked over towards the table.

Rich

PS - I called a lane violation on a 9-year-old last weekend. I don't usually work that young, but they were in desparate need of officials. I went from varsity boys to 9-year-olds in one night -- a definite paradigm shift.
