Barring an administrative T, the direction of the alternating possession arrow is initially established with the game-starting jump ball. The possession arrow also shows which team will have the ball to start the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter. The arrow does not change until the ball is inbounded.

The purpose of the alternating possession arrow is to show which team will receive the ball in case of a held ball, double foul, double lane violation on free throw attempt, a lodged ball (between rim and backboard), OOB when neither partner knows who touched it last. Another results if the official allows a team two free throws when it should have been a 1-and-1and the shooter misses the first shot and the lead official retreives the ball and realizes that it should only be a 1-and-1 situation. (NOT ME! :), this time...)

What are other situations? Any more?

Double techs - one per team. Inadvertent whistle during a loose ball.

More exactly: inadvertent whistle during a time when there is no team control.

Not true - no team control on a throw in, but you wouldn't go to arrow if you had an inadvertent whistle while A1 is holding the ball OOB.

Hmmm...how about, "The arrow does not change until the AP throw-in ends."

ok, except during a throw-in (HS only). But if we're gonnna pick nits, what exactly is a "loose ball"? Under HS/NCAA of course.

Same thing as over the back :)

Let us all take this moment to remind ourselves that the alternating possession arrow is NOT official. The official possession is kept in the home team's scorebook. The arrow is only an aide for players, coaches, and fans, and yes, some officials as well, even though an official should ALWAYS know who has alternating possession without looking at the arrow.
