I feel like I did when I got my first Varsity assignment.

Let me intorduce myself.
I'm a rancher in Montana, just finishing up my 20th year of basketball officiating. Four years now of football also, but basketball is my passion.

Anyway, it's great to be here, and I'll let you know more about me as we go. Looks like a great place to learn other officials' secrets of success.

Montana?!? So...you drive a couple miles for assignments?

Welcome!

Larks ~

I was just assigned the State "B" Girls Tournament last week. 490 miles, one way.

One of our younger officials has a Cessna 182 and is a sponge for knowlege. He has offered to fly me to the tournament in exchange for a motel room and a chance to watch the State Tournamnet.

If my wife decides not to go, I'm going to take him up on the offer.

You get movie and a snack on that flight? Wow, 490 miles....how long would that take to drive factoring the 85 mph and / or snow?

If we have to drive, we'll allow about 8.5 hours.
Either way the State pays 38.5 cents per mile, round trip.

If the game is not local here (AK) We do it by float plane or ferry. We would do it by dog sled....but no snow this year!

Big deal! I have to drive in northern VA traffic and it also takes 8.5 hours. :D Seriously, 490 miles is a heck of a lot of traveling. Whew!

Blackhawk: welcome to the party!

Hear, hear!

Hell, I walk or take the Metro and it's still bad around here - people in D.C. don't know how to drive! (Especially in snow . . .)

490 miles, one way, uphill both ways, in waist-high snow, and hurricane force winds?

Oh wait, that was my mother going to school.

Perhaps I should keep it to myself that my last assignment was within walking distance of my home.

Welcome to the board. We look forward to learning from you as well.

Mark: I have missed all of the bad weather in DC this winter except for the snow on 5 Jan. I came back to CA on the 6th. I have a feeling that my wife will make me pay big time for her having to shovel the snow. $$$$$$$$$

Hey Blackhawk,

Greetings from the deep south! My family and I traveled to Bozeman last summer to visit relatives. Montana is a beautiful state. Done any football games in the snow? ;)
