The thread about forfeits got me wondering. What are the criteria that officials use in determining that a "travesty" has occured or is occuring? Have any of you ever forfeit a game for it?

I reffed a B-league varsity game the other night that was so lacking in talent that I think anyone would consider it a travesty. However, we finished the game. :-)

Z, I had that game on Monday! Maybe it was the same game, kind of like Groundhog Day!!

I did a game this year where one team's uniforms were so ugly....

U...G...L...Y...you ain't got no alibi, YOU UGLY.

Sorry for the smart a$$ remark in my first post. I know what it is like when you are trying make a serious post and all you get is what I first posted.
Here are some situations that would warrant a "travesty of the game"
If the coach is tossed and the players and bench personnel keep on swearing at the official(s).
Fans keep throwing debris on the court.
Coach refuses to put team on the floor.
Players won't put the ball in play or won't try to make a basket or defend for one reason or another.
I don't want to think about this any more. I just hope none of these ever happen to me.

Basically any agregious, extreme unsportsmanlike conduct by players, coaches, fans, whatever, that make further administration of the game impossible in the referee's view, could be classified this way.

It's a tough one, because it really does only happen once in a blue moon.

Sorry also for the jokes, but sometimes it's hard to resist, you know? ;)

I think this is like the old test for pornography -- you know it when you see it. It's hard to imagine how it would really come up. Perhaps if a team was losing with 3 minutes left, was PO'd, and started calling lot's of excessive TO's, one after another, and taking the T's. Or if A is trying to inbound after a T, and B keeps stepping over and deliberately hitting the ball so A can't inbound, leading to T after T . . .

I had it happen this year. Coach got 2 T's and got kicked out in the 4th quarter. A lady from the school who had formerly been their coach came over to finish coaching the game, oh, yeah, and the principal came with her. He sat and didn't say a word until his team took a timeout with less than 10 seconds left down by 4. He then strolled out on the floor and proceeded to tell me that I had thrown the game and what a sorry individual I was. TWEET: WHACK He seemed to like it. "Good, call another one." TWEET: WHACK
He said, "Why don't you go to hell." I said, "Ball game,"
and walked off the court. I later looked up travesty in the dictionary and this guy's picture was there.

Wow, that's actually worse than Eustachy's meltdown in the Iowa State / Michigan State elite-8 game a few years back.
Down by 4? That's not insurmountable, even with 10 seconds left.

So Justa, what was the paperwork like after that game? I sincerely hope this principal is severely disciplined not only by the school, but also by the state high school league. What an example to set for your student athletes.

I'll never cease to be amazed!

For this group, it probably was. This was an 8th grade girls game, with pretty low talent levels. The score was probably in the mid-twenties. The sad thing is, the team that did all the complaining was ahead for practically the whole game. When the coach got kicked out, his team was up 3, with 2 or 3 minutes left.

No paperwork. In jr. high games around here, there is no report even if the coach chases somebody with an axe. I related the incident to the head of the local school board where it happened. He was supposed to pass it along to the board where this principal's school is located. If anything came of it, I haven't heard. I figured it would be just a private reprimand or nothing at all.

Grade 8 girls ball...unbelievable. It just never ceases to amaze me how absolutely s***ty people can be. Really.

I'd be going to this guy's Superintendent. Absolutely unacceptable, especially from the head administrator of a school. :o
