Question

In a recent thread, MTD Sr. said there hasn't been a lot of discussion recently regarding unusual plays or rule interpretations.

Here's one I posted a long time ago, but I thought I'd just throw it out now for fun. It came from a discussion among a bunch of us who were killing time between games.

You are officiating a game under NF rules on the deck of a cruise ship. Following a basket by team A, B1 is advancing the ball up the court. He is still in the backcourt when your count reaches 7 seconds.

Just then, the ship crosses the International Date Line and it is now yesterday!!!

The question is: does B1 get an additional 24 hours to get the ball into the frontcourt?

No, not even under FIBA rules where the backcourt count is eight seconds not ten seconds.

Depends which direction you're heading. Maybe the official has a slow whistle and he's 23 hours, 59 minutes and 53 seconds late making the call.

Alas. After posting my smart a$$ reply I now re-read the question and see that it states that it is now yesterday. So much for trying to take on Padgett.

Are you sure that the ship is not going in the direction? Then it is tomorrow. They have already violated.

That's a good point....let's see, 10 second violation, plus a T for delaying the game by 24 hours.

(obviously erroneous, because crossing the date line changes the day, but still only advances the clock an hour)

Maybe not, but you have an extra day to make it to church without committing a mortal sin (or is it venial, I forget?).
