4-41-2 - Try

4-41-2: "A try for field goal is an attempt by a player to score two or three points by throwing the ball into a team's own basket..."

Simple question here, if a player shoots in the wrong basket why do the points count for the other team according to the above?? I know I'm not connecting something somewhere.

Thanks!!

Are you asking if A1 scores in Team Bs basket why does B get the points?
If so, because its not Team As basket & not considered a try.

Read rule 5 "how points are scored". You'll see that a try isn't required.

You're looking at the rule that defines a try, but you want the rule that defines a goal in order to answer your question. Scoring a goal does not require a try.

Furthermore...

If B1 in his own backcourt tossed the ball into A1's basket from behind A1's three point arc, how many points would be credited to team A's score?

Points are always scored whenever a live ball enters the basket from above (save for player control foul by airborne shooter after it's entered the basket).

That's what I'm missing. Thanks Bob!

And another one

Technical foul on A2 for calling his teammate a &@%#! idiot loud enough for it to be heard in the parking lot. ;)

No basket, as the whistle made the ball dead, but count the foul with a spot throw in on the baseline with A going in the right direction. If in the bonus shoot the free throws.

I might let the Tech go in this situation. They would only be speaking the truth.

Only if A2's mom comes down and slaps the sh1t out of A2 for embarrassing her in public like that.
