I saw the following occur in the Duke Florida State game on Sunday Feb. 2. One of the Duke players drives to the basket scores the layup and a teammate jumps perhaps looking to tip in the miss. The ball goes in the basket and the followup player slaps backboard with both hands one on either side of the basket simultaneously.
Question 1 Is this legal in NCAA?
Question 2 Has any one seen this happen in HS and would you penalize for intentionally slapping the backboard?

I have issued the T for question 2 and received a lot of flack from players, coaches and bystanders but I still penalize it everytime I see it. What do you do?

NFHS: T for INTENTIONALLY striking the backboard. If the striking is accidental, or incidental to a play, then ignore it. By the way, the T does not change what happens to the shot...if the ball goes in, count the basket then shoot the 2 Ts. If the ball misses, just shoot the Ts.

I'm afraid that I do not know the rule in the NCAA.

Here's the NCAA rule

Rule 10
Section 3. Indirect Technical Fouls
The following shall result in an indirect technical foul being charged to a
team or player:
Art. 14. Intentionally slapping or striking the backboard or causing either the backboard or ring to vibrate while the ball is in flight during a try, or while the ball is touching the backboard, is on or in the basket or in the cylinder.

NCAA rule - technical foul.
NCAA how it's usually called - BI. :(

Interesting situation, somewhat related

V1 is called for a PC by my partner. As I move to the Trail to administer the throw-in, I hear a noise (behind me, other end of the court)
Simultaneously the Home Coach jumps to his feet and declares, "Hey! He can't do that!"
Me: "Do what?"
Coach: "#24 (V1) Slapped the backboard!"
Me: "I will check with my partner and confirm what he saw. I honestly did not see it."
Coach: "You gotta keep him off the backboard."

I hustled down to my partner and he claimed there was nothing to see. I hustled back and report to the coach.

"Sorry coach, we must have missed one."

If this action had been observed by my partner I do not believe it is a violation of 10-3-14. Because there was not a shot attempt involved.

Would you issue a "T" for it as an unsporting act, i.e. intimidation?

A couple of weeks ago, I had a kid slam one with both hands, followed by slapping the backboard with both hands.

WHACK!

Coach was screaming at the player from the moment my hands came together and drilled him a new one.

Never said a word to me. :)

As for the NCAA, I saw Elton Brand do this a few years ago at Duke. He got whacked, too.
