Ten things that happened in my first 21 games reffing rec league (boys 7-8) and (girls 7-8-9 & 11-12).

1. The ball got wedged between the rim and backboard.

2. I called an obvious violation on a 7-8-9 girl who then stopped and stood in the middle of the backcourt and cried out loud.

3. 3 games have been done with opposing teams wearing identical colored shirts.

4. A small boy came out of the stands and started shooting at the opposite basket during play.

5. A volunteer mom scorekeeper had the score sheet some what messed up. Coaches agreed to start 3rd quarter tied. Mom claimed she had dislexia.

6. After a particularly good scoring play a 7-8 boy pulled his religious medal out of his shirt and was fondling it as he was running back on defense.

7. Have had 3 near misses, as dead ball recoveries have been thrown at my face from close range by 7-8 boys.

8. Partner took a hard pass to the groin from close range. Another " dead ball recovery ".

9. Several kids have run off the floor during play for various reasons: scared, confused, thirsty, full bladder, to various places, parents, bench, drinking fountain, lavatory.

10. Have had 4 different partners and have learned from each of them.

"Dead ball recovery" is a pretty apt description in this particular case.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that thought!

How many have ever seen this happen on a free throw? I thought it was all but impossible but this year I have seen it twice.

It happened yesterday during a Middle school girls' tourney game. Fortunately, it was the first of two shots.

14. had a mens league game that resulted in a marine (sitting in the stands) being assaulted by an opposing team of 7 guys. The police were called, and well... lets just say the marine wasnt as tough as he thought he was.

I had it determine the outcome of a HS Boys varsity summer tournament a few months ago. Team is down four with five seconds to play. They inbound the ball and the defense fouls with 2 seconds left. Double bonus. Kid makes the first, and tries to miss the second on purpose, but wedges it between the rim and the backboard.
The team that is down by 3 has the arrow. On the inbounds play, they make a three to tie the game and win in OT.
