Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!

Ok, maybe not Joe Frazier, but grunewar anyhow…..

I just completed my BV Rec schedule and Spring Rec League and was doing my last “hey you” scrimmage game today. 25 seconds left in the game, H down by 4 and V in-bounding the ball at the table. I stand away wide, and in the backcourt to get a good angle. TWEET! Here we go….

V in-bounds the ball near the circle and an H player dives and bats the ball back toward me, I move to get out of the way and V bats the ball toward the center circle, I pivot to get good position and BAM! I feel like someone just kicked me hard in the right calf! I keep my eye on the play and go down to a knee.

TWEET, foul on H! I turn and report the foul and I can hardly walk. I go down on a knee for a good 30 secs. I call both coaches to the table and tell them I’m in a bad way and can barely move, I’ll do my best the remaining 20 secs of the game/season. They understand. Game ends without incident and I hobble off the court.

Table offers me an ice pack, a mom offers me IBUOPROPEN, and the facility manager is filling out a report (apparently required if they hand out ice packs). I hobble to my car and am in the RICE mode now hoping tomorrow is better……doubtful. I may have a Dr in my future.......

My summer season begins 11 July…….I hope!

Did I mention I was by myself this game? No P to bail me out…… :(

Hope it's nothing serious. :(

Sounds like a pulled/torn calf muscle. Was there last football season. I thought it had healed three times, only to re-aggravate it on the field a few weeks later. Miserable injury.

Oh Doctor........

Partially torn tendon just alongside/behind calf muscle. He says, with a little rest, it should be OK on its own in about a week and I should be ready for the summer season starting the week of 11 July.

Rest? No activity? Me?

Patience is NOT one of my strong virtues! :(

Sounds as if it could be worse. And as if you're eager to test my hypothesis. ;)

Hope you find a way to rest it!

Unless you desperately need the money you might consider bypassing the summer league. You need to be healthy for the meat & potatoes when November rolls around.

Sounds like you may have torn or partially torn the gastroc....

hurts like h*ll for a day or two..then you can walk OK...takes about two to three weeks before you can run....if you push it, you will likely tear it again.

I've done it twice.....the second time ended my basketball career...Doc tells me there is some scar tissue buildup in there that restricts the bloodflow to the muscle and causes it to cramp up very easily. Just can't take the pounding up and down the hard court....

gastrocnemius? I was playing co-ed volley ball three years ago, and hardly moved to hit the ball. Felt like I had been shot in the calf from behind. Brutal pain, right away. Went to the doc...torn gastrocnemius. Happened during Christmas break so I only lost like three weeks of ref'ing. Healed pretty quick.

While we're on the subject

Put me in the club of officials with a leg/foot problem. I have a bone spur on my right heel. After all the spring league games I worked, it really hurt. I saw the doctor yesterday about it and she said if it gets any worse, I might need surgery (last resort). She gave me some good advice about shoe inserts and also taping my foot in a certain "holding pattern" while I sleep so it would be much less painful when I first get up in the morning and walk on it. If the inserts and taping work, I should be OK and might even be able to continue officiating. I know I've made a lot of jokes here about taking meds, but the last think I want to have happen is to get totally reliant on painkillers. I do have a scrip for a fairly powerful one, but I have myself conditioned not to take them unless it's absolutely necessary.

In my case, it is the Plantaris Tendon.......

Thanks for the advice guys. You are spot on with your treatment suggestions too! Either:

a) You guys are Doctors,

b) You were in the Doctor's Office with me yesterday and heard what he said,

c) This has happened to you, or someone you know, or

d) You slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

PS - Mark, I hope your situation turns out ok. :(

They should make Viagra for legs.

At my age, the only thing Viagra is good for is to keep me from rolling out of bed. :(
