NBA Traveling
 

Watching Game 1, and LeBron had the ball, not dribbling, with one knee on the floor. He got up to two feet, all without dribbling. No travel called.

I glanced over the NBA rulebook...nothing about getting up from the floor without dribbling. Did I miss something or do they not consider that traveling?

This is not a travel under NBA rules.. A player who gains possession of the ball on the floor is allowed to stand up and establish a pivot foot. There is no explicit rule, like NF/NCAA that disallows a player from attempting to stand up when gaining possession on the floor.

Isn't the title of this thread an oxymoron? :D

While I'm not nearly as versed in the NBA rules as others, I think this only applies if they have a foot in place when they are on the floor....essentially already having a pivot foot. They can rise as long as they maintain that foot as a pivot foot. I don't think they can get up if they are lying on their back/belly/side, only if they're kneeling.

Also, they can fall while holding the ball without traveling.

It applies whether your foot is in place or not. You can stand up regardless of your position on the floor. Now you might be able to dribble or not depending on what happened prior to gaining possession.

correct. Pivot foot is irrelevant on this type of play. There is no pivot foot established therefore until a foot is actually planted it is not and cannot be a travel.
