Coaching in a JV tournament tonight. We were at the opponets gym but because of a higher tournament seed we were the home team. Our girl was fouled. The official looked at the scoreboard and saw 10 fouls for the home team. Thought it was two shots and administered the first free throw by announcing two shots. Should have been one and a bonus. The shot was missed. The officials then realized it should have been a one and bonus. I don't think the officials new what to do and admitted so later. They decided to shoot again with one and a bonus with everybody on the lanes. What is the correct call? Is this classified as a correctable error? They didn't fail to award a free throw. They just told everybody the wrong number of throws.

By rule,the officials could not re-shoot the free throw.There is no error to correct since the 1/1 was correctly shot. All they can do now is carry on from the point where they blew the whistle to try and sort things out.Whoever had the ball when the whistle blew should get the ball again for a throw-in.If neither team had possession when the whistle went,you go with the arrow.

Actually, there's a new case book play that's directly on point. Basically it states that if no one made an effort to rebound the ball and one team just ends up with it, the team with the AP arrow should get the ball. I remember reading this back in September and thought it was a pretty interesting interp.

*8.6.1 SITUATION:
A1 is about to attempt the first of a one-and-one free-throw situation. The administering official steps in and erroneously informs players that two shots will be taken. A1's first attempt is unsuccessful. The missed shot is rebounded by: (a) B1, with all other players motionless in anticipation of another throw; (b) A2, with all other players motionless in anticipation of another throw; or (c) B2, with several players from both teams attempting to secure the rebound. The officials recognize their error at this point.

Ruling: In (a) and (b), the official's error clearly put one team at a disadvantage (players stood motionless and didn't attempt to rebound). Play should be blown dead immediately and resumed using the alternating-possession procedure. In (c), both teams made an attempt to rebound despite the official's error and had an equal opportunity to gain possession of the rebound. Play should continue.
