With all due respect, I think that the officials who are looking to make this call are simply looking for trouble.

I have seen one case where a technical foul should have been issued for a player leaving the court unauthorized. It was on America's Funniest Videos (or some such show) and the player in question went out the double doors on one side of the court (off of the endline). Then, a few seconds later, appeared through the other set of double doors on the other side of the court — completely unguarded, of course. The ball was passed to him and he promptly made a 3-pointer.

The case above is a situation where the player knowingly and purpousfully disregarded the rules and gained an advantage in doing so. A technical foul is deserved in this case — hopefully recognized before the 3-point attempt so that you can disallow that as well!

In the other cases that I have seen mentioned on this board, calling a technical certainly doesn't seem warranted and will probably only get you into hot water.

That's my $0.02 anyway...

Ok, but what if one foot is OOB so that the players torso is on the line? In other words half their body is out and the other half is in? [/B]
you want to use good sound judgement in making calls. i think it is important to officiate a game by the rules, but more so to officiate by the intent and the spirit of the rules. In this case, it would be a good idea to pass. If you officiate only by the rules without any COMMON SENSE, it will get you into some trouble!~

Josh:

Interesting that you quote M. Padgett in your signature line. If my fading memory is correct Mark has a son named Josh and the son became a member of this forum (I think), about a year ago. Would you by any chance be related? (I know the last name is different). Just curious.
