A). A free throw that misses everything is?

B). A free throw that hits the net only is?

C). A free throw hits the backboard but misses the rim is?

All are violations by the shooter. 9-1-3 He/she shall throw within 10 seconds to cause the ball to enter the basket or touch the ring before the free throw ends.

AND Don't forget to continue to watch for another violation which may result in a double violation- no basket- go with the arrow for a throw in under the basket

Good info!!! I'm a first year offical. This is my 1st time posting. In the above cases, if this was the 1st free throw do you assess the penalty imediatly and take away the second free throw? I read all of 9-1 ,but; still don't understand.

RookieDude Wed Jan 22, 2003 03:10am

Nope, you don't "take away" the second free throw...go ahead and administer any additional free throws just as you normally would.

Welcome to the board.

Thanks Dude. So in the case where A1 was the offender, the penalty prevents the opportunity for team A to get possesion after the second attempt if the the second attempt is unsuccessful, right?

RookieDude Wed Jan 22, 2003 07:32am

I'm not really sure what you are asking here, Nu Whistle.(Working the nightshifts) But, even if the basket was made...if a memeber of the same team that is shooting the FT violates, the other team gets the ball...if there are no more Free Throws to be shot.

Remember Nu Whistle...if an opponent of the FT shooter violates...then you put your closed fist out to the side, waiting to see if the shot is good. If the shot is good, simply let your hand down and forget the violation...if the shot is missed, you give the shooter another shot.

Other things can come into play during the FT...but I don't want to confuse you right now...spend some time studying your rule and case books...spend some time on this forum...ask questions...get better! :)

I think Nu Whistler is asking what happens immediately after the three cases he describes. In all three, the official blows his whistle, makes the mechanic for a pitiful FT by the shooter, then administers a throw-in on the endline for team B.

Of course, situation B is not illegal if the ball passes through the cylinder first!

By rule, the crowd can yell airball after the first two situations, but not the third :)

Sven Wed Jan 22, 2003 06:36pm

Because I'm certain that none on this board would use any mechanics other than approved ones, :D I can only ask what signals you may have seen others use to indicate "no contact with the rim."

(Other than the blowing of the whistle, that is.)

I've seen the toilet bowl swish many times.

I currently use the whistle, stop clock signal, point the other way, but say "violation or no rim or...."

Nu Whistler Wed Jan 22, 2003 10:45pm

"Velen danke" to all. I'm sorry my question wasn't clear but it appears you understood anyway. I understand now. Thanks again.

"toilet bowl swish"?

Is it clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Depends on which hemisphere you are in. I'm gonna go check..BRB...Ok North America is counter-clockwise. :)

This violation should be called by the T (2-man) or C (3-man) that is covering the FT attempt. The L should not make this call unless it is obvious and the covering offical misses it.
