Im not a referee, but a curious fan. What are the rules for the defensive team players that are around the free throw lane during a free throw ie, what are they alowwed to do concerning making noises, clapping, trying to distract the shooter. I was under the impression they could just stand with their hands up.

49john,

You are correct. The word is disconcert the shooter. Anything that falls into this category is a violation. This includes but is not limited to making noises, clapping, trying to distract the shooter, burping, farting, waving arms, the dreaded hold your hands up and move your fingers back and forth. I hope this clears that up. If not check out rule 9-1-art. 5.

Tony,

You know there is no signal for a fragrant foul.

They may also just stand with their hands down.
